Robert Downey Jr.’s return as Doctor Doom has opened up a world of possibilities for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While fans speculate whether the RDJ is returning to play Victor von Doom or a variant of Tony Stark (even if the Russos made it clear at SDCC), there is one variant of Doctor Doom that should make it in the MCU, even if for a cameo.

While there are a slew of versions of Doctor Doom who could make a cameo in Doomsday and Secret Wars, there is one in particular that ties together two superhero factions that might be instrumental to the downfall of Doom and whoever they decide will be the big bad of Avengers: Secret Wars.

Avengers: Secret Wars is expected to have a lot of cameos, ranging from heroes that we have yet to see interact with the Avengers to alternate versions of fan-favorite characters. Another character that has been recently revealed to be part of the MCU is Doctor Doom, who will be played by Iron Man alum, Robert Downey Jr.

While the role that he essays could be that of classic Doom, there are a slew of other variants that Kevin Feige could have Robert Downey Jr. play, such as The Doctor Doom in a Wolverine Skeleton.

Hailing from Earth 691, this Doctor Doom comes from a world run over by Martian Masters. While others who stood against them died, this Doom transferred his brain into the Adamantium Skeleton of Wolverine. Conjuring a similar image to that of a T-800 unit, this Doctor Doom has little chance of being the main antagonist of the film. However, his appearance in Secret Wars might pose a significant challenge to the Avengers, The Fantastic Four, or the X-Men.

Avengers: Secret Wars is essentially going to do what Deadpool & Wolverine, Spider-Man: No Way Home, and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness have been trying to perfect in the phases gone by. The idea would be to create a story with meaningful cameos from Marvel Legacy properties, which could show audiences what these heroes have been through in their own universes.

From Eric Bana‘s Hulk to Jessica Alba‘s Sue Storm, there are a slew of cameos that Marvel could craft to make their films the cash grabbing spectacle that they hope for it to be. However, if one film has managed to perfect the use of its multiversal cast, it’s Spider-Man: No Way Home.

While films like Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Deadpool & Wolverine took place in distant otherworlds that had little consequence, No Way Home brought the Multiverse into Sacred Timeline, which not only upped the stakes but also left lasting consequences in the universe, which with Peter Parker no longer being a public figure or being remembered by those he loved.
