The Dragon Ball franchise first saw a Super Saiyan when Son Goku transformed against Frieza. After Frieza killed Krillin, Goku was consumed by rage and transformed into a Super Saiyan. But he was never the legendary Super Saiyan that Vegeta mentioned. The legendary status was held by Broly, who first appeared on Dragon Ball Z: Broly – The Legendary Super Saiyan.
Broly has only one form and was born with a power level of 10000. In his transformed form, he could take on Super Saiyan Goku, Vegeta, Gohan, Trunks, and Piccolo. Even though he is so strong and feared, Broly will always remain inferior to Goku in terms of being a Saiyan. Goku can and has transformed into several ascended Super Saiyan forms, while Broly never achieved it.
Broly’s Strength Became His Weakness
Broly is one of the strongest characters in the Dragon Ball franchise. In his initial stage, he is calm and has a tall and pale figure. But when he gets angry, he has no control over his emotions and transforms into a mindless Super Saiyan. He destroys anything in his path and even kills his father, Paragus. But there might be a reason why Goku is still better when it comes to being a Super Saiyan. A fan theory explores why Broly, being stronger, cannot surpass Goku.
The fan theory says, “This is because in order to reach it, Super Saiyan level 1 must first be mastered, and doing so requires discipline, calmness, and self-control. I don’t think I need to tell anyone here that those are qualities Broly utterly lacks.” Broly’s rage is the reason behind his transformation, and he never thought of mastering it. On the other hand, all the Super Saiyans from Earth trained their minds and bodies to attain ascended forms.
Vegeta was the first person to mention the Super Saiyan. He visualized it as a golden Oozaru and mentioned that the legendary Super Saiyan was soon consumed with rage and became mindless. He destroyed himself and the people around him in that form. Vegeta’s description is pretty much similar to Broly’s. The latter had a mind control device to keep him under control. Broly can be the legendary Super Saiyan, but he might never reach Goku’s level.
Broly’s Raw Strength Surpasses That Of Goku And Vegeta
Goku, Vegeta, and all the other Saiyans on Earth have multiple transformations. But when Broly debuted, none of the Saiyans could contain him during battle. He demolished all of them in their Super Saiyan forms, and only a combined attack helped in defeating the legendary Super Saiyan. In his Super Saiyan state, Broly’s physique becomes huge, his pupils vanish, and instead of being blonde, his hair turns greenish-yellow.
Akira Toriyama was careful not to provide a single character with all the abilities. If he had made Broly somehow learn to control his rage, he might have even posed a threat to the gods. Even though Goku’s Super Saiyan progress has been slow compared to Broly’s, he has attained control over his form. His godly forms can easily take on the raging Super Saiyan.
