Black Myth: Wukong, at the time of writing, sits at no. 4 spot on the Steam peak players chart with just over 1.4 million players. This peak is higher than CD Project’s action RPG, shattering the peak concurrent users record for a single-player game on Steam.
Set in ancient China with roots deep into the lore of Journey to the West, the eponymous novel follows the Monkey King, Sun Wukong on his epic journey full of legendary creatures spawned in Chinese mythology, and the pursuit of enlightenment.
The game itself is a cultural milestone of the entire nation, and the studio behind it received funding from several investors, including Chinese tech giant Tencent and mobile game publisher Hero Entertainment.

Game Science’s Action RPG Springs to Success Despite Controversy
It defied all expectations in spite of the controversy raging on In days closing into the release. Accusations of sexism and lack of diversity, particularly regarding the absence of female characters, have sparked debate among the media, but it seems that players just don’t care about it and want to dive into the stunning world of the Monkey King.
However, many have questioned these numbers, speculating that the majority or all could be from Chinese players since the game is tied to one of the greatest creations in Chinese literature.

Since Valve’s game client doesn’t show numbers from different countries, whether it is Chinese players alone or globally, beating multiplayer giants such as DOTA 2, Apex Legends, and one of the most popular single-player games ever is a massive feat.
