The Star Wars universe is experiencing a bit of a low point, especially after the failure of The Acolyte. The space opera saga was launched back in 1977 and primarily focused on the Skywalker family for most of its mainline films. However, with the advent of streaming, the franchise branched into more diverse stories.

Despite taking fans to an all-new era, The Acolyte was heavily criticized for its storyline and overall pacing issues. Moreover, the series was canceled after just one season, primarily because of low viewership and negative online reactions. As a result, Star Wars fans are debating the kind of stories they hope to see in the franchise but fear more original stories are unlikely.

On Reddit, user @TheGimp76 shared a desire to see a prequel series exploring the friendship between Donnie Yen’s Chirrut Îmwe and Forest Whitaker’s Saw Gerrera, who appeared in 2016’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

How about we get some stories that are completely divorced from the Skywalker era?

User @thepusherman74 made the above statement, expressing a desire for the franchise to move past the Skywalker saga.

Despite the success of Andor, another prequel to Rogue One, most fans agreed that they did not want to see any more prequels. Fans felt that primarily because such stories must adhere to the established canon. Hence, the Star Wars universe must listen to the fans and move past the Skywalker saga.

In the same Reddit thread, fans further shared the merits of the Star Wars franchise moving on from the Skywalker saga. However, most fans felt that the failure of The Acolyte would affect Disney’s ability to take more risks and explore different eras and original stories in the franchise.

It would appear from Acolyte we’re in the minority. Disney won’t be trying that again for a while.

User @20InMyHead made the above statement, explaining why they felt Disney was unlikely to back more projects such as The Acolyte. As a result, it is evident that the fans want more original stories but fear that the recent entry’s failure would affect that possibility.

After The Acolyte was unceremoniously canceled, the next entry in the franchise will be released in December 2024, in the form of Star Wars: Skeleton Crew. The series also does not have ties to the Skywalker saga and it will be interesting to see if it proves to be a success.
