Game Science’s Black Myth Wukong was initially announced way back in 2020 and quickly impressed the gaming community with its unique setting and graphics. After several years of being stuck in development hell, the game was globally released on August 20th, 2024.
Within hours of release, fans claimed that the game had truly delivered the expectations it had set and, in some cases, even exceeded them. The game offers an action-packed adventure set in a gorgeous world. This has allowed the game to sell over 10 million copies just within three days of its release!
Black Myth Wukong Continues to Smash Records
Developer Game Science has revealed that Black Myth Wukong has managed to sell over 10 million units within just a few days after its release. That’s an incredibly high number, considering the fact that it’s basically the first time we’ve ever seen a Chinese studio making a AAA game.
Before this hit game, the developer was known for its mobile titles, such as Art of War: Red Tides and 100 Heroes. The company started off with 13 employees and pumped that number to 140 to develop its biggest success ever.

Well, Black Myth Wukong sales figure isn’t that quite shocking since Steam’s numbers already hinted that the game will be a hit. Right after the title went live, it managed to pull in more than a million gamers on Valve’s service. Game Science’s title even managed to surpass games such as Dota 2, Palworld, Lost Ark, and Counter-Strike 2.
There’s no doubt that the Journey to the West-inspired title has been met with incredible reviews from both critics and players alike. However, it comes with its own issues and problems.
Right before the title’s launch, many creators received strange guidelines stating that they couldn’t talk about topics such as COVID-19, China’s gaming policies, and any feminist ideas while streaming the game.
Black Myth Wukong is Boosting PlayStation 5 Sales in China
Black Myth Wukong‘s success has proven to be beneficial to Sony’s PlayStation 5 console as well! According to a Bloomberg report, the game’s success has led to a huge rise in demand for the console, particularly in China. Gamers are going on console shopping sprees like never before.
The source has stated that PlayStation 5 managed to reach the top charts of Alibaba’s electronics list right before the title’s debut on 20th August. Sony’s PS5 sales shot up during that week and were even twice as much as they were last year.
It’s shocking to see such hype for the console in China. It has proven to be one of the most challenging markets for giants such as Sony and Nintendo to enter.
