Throughout Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece, the journey of the Straw Hat Crew Members has always allured the fans but it is the ambition of Roronoa Zoro that has stood out among the fans. Unlike other members of the Pirate crew, the ambition of the Pirate Hunter is unique as it pays homage to his childhood friend, Shimotsuki Kuina.

In the decade-long series, Zoro has significantly powered-up as he zeroed in like a sword’s tip to becoming the Strongest Swordsman in the World. However, it was not just him who leveled up during the grand adventure as every member of the Straw Hat Pirate Crew had grown significantly.

While Oda-Sensei has made our favorite characters much stronger, he has not made them unstoppable because these abilities not only come up with great power but also have grave risks that can even get them killed.

Eiichiro Oda Handicaps 3 Straw Hat Members By Giving Them Unsurmountable Power

Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece primarily revolves around Monkey D. Luffy and his grand ambition of obtaining the One Piece and becoming the King of the Pirates. The series has been airing since 1995 and the adventure is still far from over.

Fans, who have been watching the series since the beginning, will know that all of the crew members have strengthened, especially Monkey D. Luffy, Tony Tony Chopper, and Roronoa Zoro. While Oda-Sensei has been kind enough to make the characters incredibly strong, to find the treasure, he gives them immense risks to balance them out.

A renowned channel on YouTube (@The.Animaze) talks about this notion; the creator stated that “power-ups always comes with a huge cost” and described how these new-found abilities have hurt its users.

The creator described the Moss Head’s King of Hell ability as “unstoppable,” but it comes with a deadly risk: “overusing it could actually kill him.” This ability was showcased during his fight with King, where he defeated the Lunarian, but he could not stay on his feet as the physical toll on his body was far too great, making him see the Grim Reaper coming for him.

The topic shifted from physical skill to Devil Fruit awakening, which can give its user the ability to cause catastrophe, but in exchange, it will drain a ton of stamina. The creator talked about the shortcoming of using Monster Points, which Chopper uses to turn into a monster. However, once the drug’s ability wears off, it will leave him temporarily paralyzed.

Likewise, Monkey D. Luffy has gained the ability to enhance his movement and agility, by changing Gears. This ability was first showcased in the Enies Lobby Arc, Gear 2 would make the Straw Hat boost his strength and speed but it’ll shorten his life.

The risk is not just limited to Gear 2 because Gear 4 will not only his stamina but also his Haki “leaving him exhausted.” Fans were impressed by this trivia as they left positive comments on the video.

One Piece Fans React To The Dark Aspect of Power-Ups

While other Shonen series tend to give no downsides to the powerups, Eiichiro Oda‘s decision to give a downside to the abilities balanced out the narrative, which has kept the audience hooked on the series.

@viaraulito commented, “Thats one of the things I like about one piece the risk taking is at an all time high when luffy uses his gears that shit is taking away from his lifespan slowly killing him and draining him in the process it’s not some shit he can just pop out every day like that”

Nevertheless, fans can’t get enough of Oda-Sensei’s stellar work, as they have grown up watching the series and can’t wait for the day Luffy and his crewmates achieve their respective goals.
