Back in February, it was reported that Tom Cruise wasted no time in initiating a meeting with Alejandro G. Iñárritu after learning the director was set to move forward with his next studio film. While the last decade mostly saw Cruise dominating the blockbuster landscape, which involved his Mission: Impossible releases, the actor has never shied away from pushing his acting chops to the test. Following his history of working with major auteurs, his alliance with the Birdman filmmaker seems like the perfect answer to Cruise’s hunger to create more original stories.

Per Deadline, the plot revolves around “the most powerful man in the world, who embarks on a frantic mission to prove he is humanity’s savior before the disaster he’s unleashed destroys everything”.

Apart from Cruise, the cast includes Riz Ahmed, Sophie Wilde, John Goodman, Michael Stuhlbarg, Sandra Hüller, and Jesse Plemons, who recently nabbed the Best Actor win at Cannes for Kinds of Kindness.

While it’s safe to say Tom Cruise is the best action star in the business, action isn’t the lone department in which he excels. But despite having delivered impeccable performances in releases like Rain Man, Born on the Fourth of July, Jerry Maguire, and Magnolia, with all of them earning him Oscar nods, he is yet to nab the accolade. However, with the MI star now joining forces with Iñárritu, who ended Leonardo DiCaprio‘s years-long Oscar drought with The Revenant, fans will hope for the story to unfold in a similar fashion in Cruise’s case.

Although the Tropic Thunder star’s new strategic partnership with Warner Bros. is looking to kickstart extravagantly, it’s important to note that this is not an exclusive deal. Not only this won’t hamper his work with Paramount, in which he’s busy developing the sequel to Dead Reckoning, but he is set to become“the first civilian to do a spacewalk”, thanks to his upcoming film from Universal.
