Other supporting characters like Mr. Terrific, Guy Gardner, and Hawkgirl are also set to play pivotal roles in the film The film was earlier titled Superman: Legacy but later changed to simply Superman. A new exciting theory reveals a possible plot for the film that shows a potential meta-nature of how Gunn will showcase his heroes in the film.

The superhero genre continues to evolve in inventive ways and while Marvel and DC continue to offer perfect escapist entertainment with their films, Amazon’s The Boys provides something more thought-provoking. The series portrays superheroes as celebrities owned by a big organization (Vought) that tries to show them in a positive and ideal way despite the organization’s shady deeds underneath.

This is a clear satirical reference to how Disney and Warner Bros own Marvel and DC, and how their films are frequently criticized as being made by a corporate committee rather than visionaries. According to a new fan theory on Reddit, James Gunn’s new Superman film will address similar issues addressed by The Boys with Superman being the factor that changes it all.

The exciting theory suggests that heroes like Mr. Terrific, Guy Gardner, and Hawkgirl will be working under Maxwell Lord and his company. The heroes perform tasks under the orders of the company and they begin to hate being corporate heroes. They feel held back by powerful personalities but working under them was the only way to be heroes without facing any irreversible damage to their reputation.

However, the theory posits that Superman will give them the much-needed push: they do not need a company backing them up to be the superheroes they have always wanted to be. The trio potentially realizes that they can be their own individuals and decide to rebel against Maxwell Lord’s orders. They potentially side with Superman as they start creating their own legacy on their own terms.

The Reddit user predicted that this was the ‘legacy’ that was referred to in the film’s previous title Superman: Legacy. If this turns out to be true, Superman will indeed be a thoroughly entertaining film that provides much more than spectacle. Just like The Boys, it will be a thematically strong film about legacy and one’s purpose. While Marvel fans might not appreciate the inclusion of social commentary, they may grow to love the film’s unique approach to Superman.

James Gunn Has A Great Reason Behind Wrapping Superman One Year Prior To Its Release

James Gunn‘s Superman has now wrapped filming and the team is working hard on the post-production process of the film. Wrapping a big superhero film one year prior to its release is rare and Marvel movies usually do reshoot some months closer to release. However, Gunn had already planned for this gap between production and its release date to give enough time to VFX artists to properly do their work.

On Threads, the director revealed that VFX artists are significant in bringing these superhero films to life and it is important to give them the time that they need for better results. While they have already started working on some CG shots suing filming, the one-year gap gives them ample time to further shape the look of the film as best as possible. Gunn wrote,

If you do some research you’ll see my films have always taken a different approach and I’ve always given my VFX artist-collaborators time to do their jobs properly and the respect they deserve. This is why we wrapped on Superman a year before release and why they’ve been hard at work on many shots for months before that. This is why we start heartily editing during the shoot. I can’t praise the VFX artists that help us create magic enough.

Superman will star David Corenswet as Clark Kent and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane. Other actors who will be a part of the film’s ensemble cast are Isabela Merced, Edi Gathegi, Nathan Fillion, Anthony Carrigan, María Gabriela de Faría, Sara Sampaio, Skyler Gisondo, Nicholas Hoult, and many others.

Superman will hit theaters on July 11, 2025.
