Parsons confessed during a roundtable discussion with Entertainment Weekly:
I already knew who Johnny was from Roseanne. That was weird because I don’t think I’ve ever auditioned alongside someone I had seen act before. I read with other people, but it was very clear that no one else was making the part their own more than Johnny did.

It’s hard to imagine anyone else playing it. However, as the show’s co-creator Bill Prady once revealed, Parsons was very close to missing out on the role.
In an episode on At Home with the Creative Coalition podcast, Prady came clean and stated that his co-creator, Chuck Lorre, was not impressed with the actor’s audition. Prądy recalled (via Wionews):
When Jim Parsons came in, he was Sheldon on a level — you know, there were people who came in and you went, `Okay, well, he`s kind of okay,` `Oh, he`s pretty good,` `Maybe he`s the guy.` And Jim came in and he was just — from that audition, he was the Sheldon that you saw on television.
He created that character at that audition, and he left the room and I turned and I went, `That`s the guy! That`s the guy! That`s the guy!` And Chuck turned and he said, `Nah, he`s gonna break your heart. He`ll never give you that performance again.
Chuck Lorre worried Parsons might not keep up his stellar performance, but Prady’s faith paid off. Parsons not only nailed Sheldon but helped create one of TV’s most beloved characters. And the rest is TV history.
