James Gunn’s DC universe is currently undergoing major reconstruction and reorientation with the comic universe’s mainframe being surgically fixed after the past 11 years’ worth of trauma. Among the central triarchy, Superman rises to the occasion before the rest as David Corenswet takes on the mantle passed down from the oh-so-controversial Henry Cavill.

To match James Gunn’s personal ambition, Superman is set to get a most faithful adaptation in live-action with Corenswet already building himself in the image of his comic counterpart. Meanwhile, the director and CEO of DC Studios whips out a sink-or-swim version of the studio’s new chapter that will determine whether the DC cinematic universe will survive in this era of Superhero fatigue.

James Gunn Casts the Perfect Superman Roster

With Zack Snyder’s reign spreading more controversy and dissent than is worth, James Gunn takes a new approach toward modeling his new DC universe from the ground up. Henry Cavill and Ben Affleck go out the door in favor of a younger, fresher version of the dynamic duo.

David Corenswet, of Hollywood fame, becomes the new Superman in Cavill’s wake with fans perfectly pacified with the choice due to his striking likeness to both his predecessor and his comic counterpart.

Among the supporting cast, Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) was announced as the famous investigative journalist Lois Lane and the love interest of Superman/Clark Kent. While, X-Men star Nicholas Hoult gets cast as Superman’s archenemy and super-genius, Lex Luthor.

However, the most striking of all characters cast as Superman’s sidekick is Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen. A recent behind-the-scenes picture released on Twitter by the DC Chief that shows Gisondo in full character costume and get-up proves how perfect Gunn’s eye for casting is.

In the words of a Reddit fan ChibzyDaze, “Red hair, freckles, cheesy smile. I’d say this looks quite good,” while another fan Individual_Second387, “He feels like everybody’s best friend with huge dorky energy.”

James Gunn’s Superman Looks to Set History in 2025

The DC Cinematic Universe is founded at the tail end of the Marvel Cinematic Universe which has in turn been a leading contributor to Superhero fatigue. As such, the rate of success ruling in favor of James Gunn is already at a scary low.

However, despite the odds, DC has established an optimistic front with a radically opposite approach toward building its franchise. With an increased and laser-sharp attention toward comic-accurate storytelling, James Gunn makes a smart decision with his casting choices and the rare few behind-the-scene leaks that show Superman’s new costume, red trunks and all included.

With a summer premiere, Superman looks to make history by launching to a worldwide audience waiting in anticipation and bated breath, David Corenswet has big shoes to fill and a large shadow to crawl out of in the aftermath of the DCEU era and its influence on modern pop culture.

Superman premieres on July 11, 2025.
