Black Clover manga returned in December 2023 after a four-month hiatus. After its return, it sold more than 19 copies. It was enough to prove how well-known Yuki Tabata’s masterpiece is. It has gained a massive fan following overseas due to its narrative and character designs. Even after achieving so much, the mangaka feels there is a massive flaw in Black Clover.
Yuki Tabata always gives his best in making Black Clover. The manga is currently headed towards its end, and the anime is currently on a hiatus. But when it comes to character development, the mangaka thinks he lacks lacking proper introduction to the characters. Apart from a handful of characters, most characters randomly appeared without anything revealed about their past.
Black Clover Lacks Proper Character Building
Popular anime franchises always explore most of their characters. The manga artists often shift from the main plot to introduce the characters and reveal their past so that the fans can connect with them easily. In the case of the Big Three of anime, all three iconic manga artists have given time to every character so that none feels left out.
When it comes to Black Clover, Yuki Tabata felt that he needed to do better in this aspect. During Jump Festa 2019, he said,
Yeah… I’m not sure I’m doing that well. There’s so many characters I want to feature more, so it’s something I need to work on. When I hear from the fans about which characters they like, that does make me want to feature them more, but I’m not sure I’m balancing things well enough. The current arc has large groups fighting each other, so I’m trying to let each character get the spotlight, but it’s not easy. I think I need to do better.
Black Clover has crossed the 350 mark in manga chapters. Most of the time, it is Asta and Yuno who get the spotlight. Sometimes, Noelle Silva and Yami Sukehiro also get their fair share of the spotlight. Apart from these 3-4 characters, others hardly get the spotlight. There are several powerful characters, but none have ever been explored properly.
Mereoleona Vermillion, Nozel Silva, William Vangeance, etc., are pretty strong, yet the fans barely know about their past. They are all on captain levels but do not have arcs or battles dedicated to them or their abilities. Since the beginning, it has been the protagonist duo who has had tons of power-ups and took credit for most of the battles.
Yuki Tabata Will Have One More Arc To Correct His Mistakes
Black Clover has entered its final arc, where the Magic Knights are facing off against Lucius Zogratis and his army. The manga is currently focusing on the battle between Noelle Silva and Acier Silva. Yuki Tabata could redeem himself by giving all the characters proper battles against the generals of Lucius. A flashback featuring their past would also help them get the missing spotlight.
Asta and Yuno are the protagonists, and they aim to be the Wizard King, so they are bound to get strong because of the narrative. However, the story involves countless characters who are significant to the plot.
Exploring every character could be tiresome, but Tabata could at least give proper exposure to the significant ones. It will help Black Clover gain more popularity, and the fans could have the option to decide on their favorite characters apart from the protagonists.
Black Clover is currently available to watch on Crunchyroll.
