Sony PlayStation releases a list of the most downloaded games at the start of each month in the US/Canada and European PlayStation Store from the last month. The list includes games downloaded across all of its platforms including PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, PlayStation VR 2, and PlayStation VR as well as free-to-play games on PS4 and PS5.
It has now released the list of the most downloaded games in December 2023 and features newly released titles such as Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, EA SPORTS FC 24, and Madden NFL 24. However, Grand Theft Auto 5 which was released ten years ago has surprisingly broken into the ranks and is in the top 3 most downloaded games in December.

Sony PlayStation released the list of the most downloaded games of December 2023 via a blog post. The list features the 20 most downloaded games on each platform in the US/Canada and European regions. Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3, the latest entry in the popular first-person shooter franchise takes the top spot and is the most downloaded game in both the US/Canada and European regions for PS5 and also for PS4 in the US/Canada region.
EA’s Madden NFL 24 and EA SPORTS FC 24, the latest installment in the Madden NFL series and football simulation franchise are in the second spot in the US/Canada and European regions respectively, both for PS5. These titles being in the first and second spot is easily understandable given the popularity of the franchises, Rockstar Games’ action-adventure title GTA 5 shocks everyone as it breaks into the top four most downloaded games in US/Canada and EU regions.
Grand Theft Auto 5 is the third most downloaded game in US/Canada and European regions on PS5. It is also the third most downloaded game in the European region and the fourth most downloaded game in the US/Canada region on PS4. Grand Theft Auto 5 was released over a decade ago in September 2013 and is one of the most popular games in the GTA series.
The game being one of the most downloaded games in December 2023 can be attributed to the announcement of GTA 6, the next installment in the popular franchise which was revealed for the first time in December itself. The title also headlined the PS Plus Game Catalog in December for Premium and Extra tier and developer Rockstar brought a new update in GTA Online called The Chop Shop. All this would have prompted players to play the popular game.
Rockstar Games’ other title Red Dead Redemption 2 is also the second most downloaded game for PS4 in both US/Canada and European regions. Minecraft took the third spot for PS4 in the US/Canada region. Five Nights at Freddy’s: Help Wanted 2, the latest entry in the Five Nights at Freddy’s series, and Among Us VR clinched the first and second spot for PS VR2 in both the US/Canada and European regions and vice versa.
Beat Saber took the third spot in both regions for PS VR2. SUPERHOT VR and Job Simulator took the first and second spots in both the US/Canada and European regions and vice versa for PSVR. Beat Games’ rhythm title Beat Saber also took third place in both regions for PSVR.
Fortnite has secured the top spot in both US/Canada and European regions in the free-to-play category for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. The newly released free-to-play FPS The Finals took the second and third spot in the US/Canada and European regions, respectively.
