Most networks nowadays are churning out their most successful IPs to bring out more stories in hopes of keeping their viewership numbers high. HBO, too, has ventured in that direction, the most successful of its projects being Game of Thrones. Despite having a controversial final season, the earth-shattering clientele and record-breaking Emmy wins of the previous seasons gave a certain promise to the execs that this franchise had more to offer than they had initially realized. Hence, House of the Dragon was born.

Another brainchild of the seasoned author George R. R. Martin, House of the Dragon is the prequel to HBO’s Game of Thrones. It sought to bring back the franchise’s glory days, and it was successful in doing so in more ways than one. After all, the show had a huge influence from Martin himself, who brought in Ryan Condal to adapt the show for Max. Martin and HBO are cooking up another show, this time an animated one, that might interest fans of both Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon.

It has been common knowledge for quite some time that a number of Game of Thrones spinoffs are currently in the works at HBO headquarters, with George R. R. Martin overlooking their production. Hence, he is the most reliable source when it comes to news about the development of the numerous shows taking form under his watchful eye. In a recent post on his blog, Not A Blog, he wrote:

“Work on the other two animated projects continues apace, however…and meanwhile, we have moved NINE VOYAGES, our series about the legendary voyages of the Sea Snake, over from live action to animation. A move I support fully. Budgetary constraints would likely have made a live action version prohibitively expensive, what with half the show taking place at sea, and the necessity of creating a different port every week, from Driftmark to Lys to the Basilisk Isles to Volantis to Qarth to… well, on and on and on. There’s a whole world out there. And we have a lot better chance of showing it all with animation. So we now have three animated projects underway.”

Nine Voyages was previously being developed as a live-action, and it was thought that a younger actor would be brought in to portray Corlys Velaryon, the Sea Snake, currently being portrayed by Steve Toussaint in House of the Dragon.

What is Nine Voyages about?

Nine Voyages was one of the original Game of Thrones spinoff shows that has been under development for quite some time now. The idea got a sudden push with the success of House of the Dragon, and fans loved the portrayal of Corlys Velaryon by British actor Steve Toussaint. Corlys Velaryon was the greatest seafarer in Westerosi history, and Nine Voyages will cover the story of his younger years and adventures at sea. Among all the spinoffs under development, Nine Voyages is the most further ahead, and has a good chance of being greenlit in the near future.

Nine Voyages now being developed as an animated series is welcome news for fans who loved Steve Toussaint’s version of Corlys Velaryon. That is because there’s a good chance that Toussaint can keep playing his fan-favorite character without being recast, even if it is just voice acting from behind a screen.
