Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League is fast approaching on its February 2nd release date. After countless delays and numerous trailers, players can finally play as Harley Quinn and other DC characters in a collaborative effort to kill the Justice League. However, from the initial announcement of Rocksteady’s next DC project to now has been faced with criticism and backlash on the overall project.

In a recent interview, Darius Sadeghian, product director at Rocksteady, has assured players they want to create a community that can be experienced and shared with friends. Despite having features like a battle pass, Sadeghian refrained from calling Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League a “live-service” game. Elements from the Batman: Arkham series are still here mixed with their Suicide Squad game.

Throughout its development, Rocksteady’s Suicide Squad game has not met players’ expectations. The idea of playing a superhero-themed video game with your friends has always been a dream for fans for quite some time. When it came to light via leaks that Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League would have a battle pass, fans were not happy with the idea.

Massive live service projects usually don’t go well for studios. In today’s gaming landscape, almost everyone has a live-service game they already stick to. Whether it’s Fortnite, Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn, or any other game on the market, it’s hard to pull players away from their already-tied relationship with a live-service game.

Especially when the game retails at $69.99 on all platforms, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League is a tough sell if Rocksteady truly wants to build a community with DC Comics fans. The team says you can play the game as a single-player experience but multiplayer is the biggest feature that makes it stand out from other superhero video games.

Gotham Knights released over a year ago which gave players a multiplayer superhero video game. However, the game left an overall bad impression on the community. Many fans still bought the game because of its multiplayer features. With Suicide Squad not having the best impression so far, this DC project might find the same success because of the simultaneous multiplayer experience.

The embargo for Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League previews recently lifted which has been mixed overall. While some outlets felt the game was generic and uninspired, others believed there are good elements here from Rocksteady’s previous DC games but raised more questions that likely won’t be answered until the game fully releases.

Is a shared experience enough to keep players engaged with Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League? Or should Rocksteady have kept this a single-player-only experience and ditched the whole live-service-y elements? Only time will tell as Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League is scheduled to release on February 2nd for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
