It won’t be an exaggeration to say Arrowhead’s latest co-op, third-person shooter Helldivers 2, has completely transformed the multiplayer gaming scenario. The game has proved how a large number of players can turn up by coming together to complete difficult missions.
Just like what happened during the recent Major Order, where 70% of the player base assembled to take down the Automatons and the Terminids. Given that the fight for liberation is not over yet, it won’t be surprising to see even more players show up the next time to help resolve planetary disputes.
Players compare Helldivers 2 to the golden age of gaming
Recently, players expressed their liking for Helldivers 2 on Reddit. Some even went on to say that it reminds them of the older era of online gaming. A player on the r/Helldivers subreddit named ‘MadMac619’ talks about “how stale and homogenous mainstream gaming has become” and that the gameplay loops have evolved into “over-designed to oblivion and back”.
Another user in the comments said that they were just happy that they are getting to see “a gameplay loop that’s just dumb fun” in Helldivers 2. Other users also suggested that the gameplay loop of Helldivers reminded them of the good old Left 4 Dead or ‘Halo 2/3 days wherein there was no progression, except the cosmetic stuff, and still “people would play that stuff nonstop for thousands of hours.”

The subreddit discussion was filled with players expressing their joy on seeing new players take on the game, where they are “blindly charging into a patrol” that was possibly to avoid. However at the same time, these players are having fun, and “that’s how games are meant to be played”.
A player also shared their experience when how in a mission, two players “stealthed through the main objective” meanwhile the other two “circled round the map, drawing all the bot drops and wiping out all the outposts.” Although there was no real communication between the four, all of them understood the general idea and acted accordingly.
What is the Golden Age of Gaming Pinnacle?
Several players believe the years between 2000 and 2009 to be the golden age of gaming. The title comes mainly because several top games, which revolutionized how games were played were released during this time.
Meanwhile, there is also a group of players who believe 2008 was the pinnacle of this era, and that the year saw some of the most critically acclaimed and quality games. Irrespective, it seems like the players on Reddit do believe that Helldivers 2 has a touch of nostalgia with every possible technologically advanced element.
