"A lot of actors I bond with have been doing this": Emma Stone Slapped Willem Dafoe 20 Times for an Offscreen Scene

Emma Stone started her career in acting at a very young age. During her early teens, she took part in theatres and gained enough name for herself. By the time she was in her late teenage days, she had already made her debut in Hollywood with a tv series, In Search of the New Partridge Family. One of her biggest roles in the industry was her portrayal of Gwen Stacy in The Amazing Spider-Man franchise alongside Andrew Garfield.

The actors go through many weird, unexpected situations in their time in Hollywood but Emma Stone’s is undoubtedly one is one of the weirdest of the lot. In her movie AND with Willem Dafoe, who has been known to be a dedicated person for any role he plays, Dafoe let actress Emma Stone slap him 20 times off-screen for making the scenes more realistic in the movie.

While in an interview with the New York Times, AND director, Yorgos Lanthimos shared that while filming for the movie, out of all the actors Willem Dafoe was most committed to his role in the movie. There even arose a scenario where Emma Stone, who plays the role of Dafoe’s daughter in the movie had to slap him over 20 times off-screen just because the Green Goblin had to make the scene look real on-screen. The most shocking thing in this whole situation was that Dafoe did not even appear on the screen for the slap and he was this dedicated to the movie.

Emma Stone on Willem Dafoe’s Generosity

Emma Stone was shocked by Willem Dafoe’s involvement with his co-stars in the movie as he frequently appeared on set even when he was not called for the day. In the interview, the director and the actors relayed that Dafoe prioritized the movie over everything else, thus letting Stone slap him multiple times. Emma Stone further shared,

“There’s this instinct to perform that many actors have — the ‘look at me, look at me!’ kind of performer, He’s the opposite of that. Maybe it’s changed through the years, a lot of actors I bond with have been doing this for a long time, and you know they’ve gone from ‘I’ to ‘We'”

Even the director agreed with what the La La Land actor had to say and appreciated Dafoe’s enthusiasm for the movie by saying, “That’s what you want from actors, to want to be part of it in any way”.
