Blake Lively is one of the most fan-favorite actresses in all of Hollywood’s entertainment industry, loved for both her excellent acting chops as well as her beautiful persona. However, even she has been facing quite a bit of controversy and backlash lately because of her initial joking reaction to a deeply serious question about domestic violence.

Although Lively went on to talk extensively about it to clear the matter off, which was about her recently released book-based movie It Ends with Us, her original reaction taking it all as a joke turned into “a major ick” for fans. To say the least, this reaction of hers was enough to forever haunt her the way her Plantation wedding with Ryan Reynolds did.

Blake Lively Under Fire for Her Joking Reaction to Domestic Violence

Recently, to promote her film It Ends with Us, Lively got in an interview with Jake’s Takes to discuss the film and the audience’s reaction to it. During this, interviewer Jake Hamilton pointed out how many people would “relate to the topics of this movie on a deeply personal level” and would “want to tell you about their lives.” That said, he raised the question:

So, if someone understands the themes of this movie [and] comes across you in public, and they want to really talk to you, what’s the best way for them to be able to talk to you about this? How would you recommend they go about it?

But instead of taking this question seriously right from the start, Blake Lively originally had a more sarcastic response. Responding to his question, she jokingly said:

[They would be] like, asking for my address or, like, my phone number or my location share? I could just location share you and then we could- [laughs] I’m just curious about- I’m a Virgo, so I’m like, are we talking logistics or are we talking emotionally?

Needless to say, this response didn’t sit well with her co-star Brandon Sklenar either, who had the most uncomfortable reaction on his face as Lively initially turned the domestic violence question into a mere joke. However, that isn’t all. While she originally responded this way, Lively then went on to talk extensively about it, genuinely addressing the issue at hand.

Pointing out the empathetic aspect of the story and how it can be healing, it can be a cautionary tale, and it can be inspiring,” Lively went on to say:

For anyone, if one ever comes up to you and says that your work meant something to them outside of just having that collective experience in a theatre where you laugh and cry and feel together, like, what a blessing. Like, you know the fact that we get to do this and it gets to mean something is like, yeah, it’s really significant.

Of course, the Gossip Girl star single-handedly handled the situation by the end by eventually, more or less, sincerely addressing the deeply serious question about domestic violence and the trauma connected to it. But even though she did that, fans are still taking her original unserious reaction to heart, mentioning how it’s a major ick for them.

Even though she tried her best to take everything under control, her initial reaction of turning it all into a joke isn’t sitting well with fans. To say the least, they’re pointing out how, instead of giving off such vibes like she couldn’t care less about it all, she “might as well have said not to go up to her or talk to her.” Taking to X, here’s what they have to say:

Looking at it from a different perspective, of course, Lively responding this way is okay as long as people only look at her as an actress instead of trying to invoke an empathetic reaction from her like one from a therapist. But looking at it from these fan reactions, it seems like this will forever haunt her the way her plantation wedding with Ryan Reynolds did.
