Mickey 17 is an ambitious project in itself. With Joon-ho’s first project since Parasite, it is something the whole world will have their eyes set on. The storyline is complex, with the 17 in the title implying the number of times Pattinson’s character dies in the film!

The trailer of the upcoming film was shown to theatre owners at CinemaCon and isn’t available for public view yet. Speaking at the conference, Joon-ho was asked what made the Twilight star the perfect fit to play the titular character of Mickey 17, he replied (via Variety):

“He’s got this crazy thing in his eyes. I felt like he could do all the different variations of Mickey in the story. He’s such a creative man.”

Pattinson himself is quite fond of Joon-ho, calling the filmmaker his “hero” (via Variety). Recalling the conversation he had with the director prior to signing the film, Pattinson shared he was told:

Mickey 17 is based on Edward Ashton’s novel Mickey 7. The protagonist Mickey Barnes signs up for a job on a human expedition sent to a foreign planet. In his own words, which were translated, Joon-ho described the film as a (via Variety):

“story about a simple man who ultimately ends up saving the world. It’s a strange type of hero’s journey.”

Furthermore, the filmmaker made a slight change to the name of the film from the novel it’s based on. The number changed because Joon-ho  “killed him 10 more times!” Alongside Pattinson, the cast also includes Steven Yeun, Naomi Ackie, Toni Collette, Mark Ruffalo, and Thomas Turgoose.

Pattinson’s phenomenal acting skills and Joon-ho’s remarkable directorial prowess- two mighty forces coming together will surely make up for an enthralling experience.

Mickey 17 is scheduled to be released in theatres on January 31, 2025
