Anne Hathaway has starred in plenty of iconic box office hits. But it’s undeniable that The Devil Wears Prada (2006) occupies a special place in her filmography and in every fan’s heart. The David Frankel-directed film had a budget between $35 to $41 million and grossed $326 million globally. It was a hit and has become a part of pop culture ever since. As such, the question is- Will a sequel to this iconic film work?

After all, Hollywood executives are seemingly looking at past films and assessing which one can shower them with money. However, often the creatives associated with those projects think differently. The same goes for The Devil Wears Prada. Anne Hathaway isn’t too sold on the idea and neither are the fans.

In 2022, Anne Hathaway sat down for an interview with The View and shared her thoughts about a possible The Devil Wears Prada sequel. While nothing has been officially announced as of yet, there are plenty of rumors floating around about one happening. But the actress isn’t too keen on doing one because as per her it was a different time back in the 2000s.

She said:

“I don’t know if there can be [a sequel]. I just think that movie was in a different era. Now everything’s gone so digital and that movie is centered around the concept of producing a physical thing and it’s just, it’s just very different.”

Hathaway is right about it being in a different era. After all, nowadays print media is almost non-existent, having been taken over by digital news portals. However, wouldn’t it be interesting to see Hathaway, Emily Blunt, and Stanley Tucci come together once again? Fans of the cult classic are torn about that.

During the interview with The View, Anne Hathaway revealed that the idea of teaming up with her previous cast mates to enter the world of Meryl Streep’s Miranda Priestly again was alluring. The Intern star said:

“It is tempting to think about Andy and Emily needing to get Miranda her coffee and she’s somewhere in Europe. And then along the way they pick up Stanley Tucci in Italy, who’s at a restaurant. It’s tempting but I don’t think it’s going to happen.”

Fans of The Devil Wears Prada didn’t like the idea of a possible sequel as well. On Reddit’s Entertainment subreddit, one wrote “A sequel is just totally unnecessary. Hollywood may not realize this, but sometimes it’s fine for beloved movies to just be left alone.

Another user wrote, “Some magic you can’t hope to capture twice because the circumstances were so precisely perfect the first time.” However, not everyone was totally opposed to the idea. One Redditor said, “If it shows her having dumped her boyfriend and unsupportive friends while living her best life, I’m here for it.”

Since the sequel idea isn’t something everyone can get on board with, how about a complete reboot? Anne Hathaway did float that idea with the panel on The View, but neither they nor many who watched it were sold on that as well. Some things are truly better left untouched.
