Sony and Marvel have always gotten some of their biggest and most dependable hits from Spider-Man. With its follow-up to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018), Sony Pictures seems to be reaching for the stars. They are, undoubtedly, leaving a huge impression on critics, and moviegoers alike with the release of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.

And ‌considering its electrifying and enchanting performance, Joaquim Dos Santos’s film is now also overtaking James Gunn’s The Flash.

Across theSpider-Verse is currently enjoying ongoing success since its intriguing $120 million opening weekend to start off last month’s box office returns. And, thus, comparing its overall figures, Across the Spider-Verse is outpacing The Flash, another movie set in the Multiversal universe.

In addition, it is only fair that the movie receives the credit it deserves after the horrendous working conditions the animators endured (which were so bad that about 100 of them quit working on the film altogether).

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Sets a New Sony Record

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse has undoubtedly earned all the positive reviews it has received thus far. Thanks to its brilliantly made live-action animation it leaves the audience speechless.

The impressive follow-up has already gotten past Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which received acclaim but only made $375.5 million globally in 2018. Thus, this demonstrates Sony’s expertise in creating a successful universe.

For the unversed, the box office (worldwide) collection for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse surpassed $600 million, shattering the prior record for Sony Pictures Animation’s highest-grossing film.

With a current global gross of $607 million, Across the Spider-Verse has surpassed the previous record-holder for the studio, The Smurfs, which stood at $563 million. Several Hotel Transylvania hits, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, The Smurfs, and many other family favorite flicks are among the top 20 Sony Animation movies.

Moreover, with positive reviews from critics and audiences, and 96% and 94% approval ratings on Rotten Tomatoes, respectively, the film has become one of the rarest to have been released.

What Does The Future Hold For Spider-Verse 3?

Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse is planned to hit theaters on March 29, 2024. This is surprisingly 301 days after the release of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse in theaters (June 2, 2023). The current release gap between Spider-Verse 3 and its sequel will be recorded in history as being the smallest ever.

Fans may not be expecting a similar change in Spider-Verse 3 when it is released next year. This is because the significant changes in this Spider-Man franchise already happened between Spider-Verse 1 and 2.

Also, it is assumed that Spider-Verse 3 could become the first animated Spider-Man movie to outperform a live-action Sony production if Across the Spider-Verse fails to achieve the $700 million milestone.

In contrast, Andy Muschietti‘s The Flash has grossed $245 million worldwide in box office revenue against a $200–220 million budget, with projections of up to a $200 million loss for Warner Bros.
