Goku has been introduced to various transformations throughout the course of Dragon Ball and some of them stand out more than others. There are often moments when these transformations change last minute. Toriyama worked hard on all of them and perfecting these modes takes a great deal of time.

Akira Toriyama Changed Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan for the Better

Dragon Ball Super’s Volume 1 featured an interview with Akira Toriyama where the mangaka explained all the plans he had with the story for Goku and all the other characters. He talked about how after creating Super Saiyan God, introducing Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan was not a form he wanted to be blue at first.

“In Battle of Gods it was red, so I figured for Revival of ‘F’ I should go with blue. That’s all (laughs). Well, actually I was thinking about having it be white, but then it would color-clash with the ‘next enemy’… so I figured I should save it for another occasion (laughs).”

Toriyama wanted the form to be white at first but ultimately that idea was to be changed. There were two reasons for the same. Both of them are rather simple. Firstly, he had plans for another character to come into play, one that could perhaps even clash with Zamasu.

The other reason was that he wanted the mode to directly contrast Super Saiyan Red. The blue could be a stark contrast compared to the red.

Goku’s Ultra Instinct Got Saved

Akira Toriyama’s original plan was to make Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan with Goku’s hair being white. While the transformation would have been one to acknowledge and be amazed by, it would have clashed with another form. His form would have been completely white and ultimately taken the shine away from one of his most strongest and mesmerizing transformations.

Ultra Instinct is one of Goku’s most iconic transformations. It is regarded to be perhaps his most powerful form as well. One feature that stands out is how, unlike every other form of his, Toriyama made Ultra Instinct colorless.

Colorless gave Goku a more simple yet powerful look that also had the possibility of clashing with Super Saiyan Blue had it been white. Had the mode already been introduced, the pivotal moment would have lost all its glory.

Dragon Ball is available to watch on Hulu.
