Winslet openly acknowledged that embodying the Russian mafia boss proved to be one of the few film roles she struggled to connect with. The character’s wardrobe, particularly unflattering for an Oscar-winning actress, further contributed to the challenge.

“I certainly couldn’t empathise with anything she wore or her hair! She had to look as though she believed she was put-together and well-dressed and a woman of wealth, when actually she looked like a trashy slut! Nails just a little bit too long, the colour not really that nice, the hair just a bit too high, two inches of re-growth, red boots with red tights, with a red coat. But it was fun, it was really fun,” she once told Contact Music.

Despite her talent, this specific role tested Winslet’s ability to fully embrace and resonate with the character’s persona.

Kate Winslet Tried Finding Common Ground With The Character

Despite the repulsive nature of her character, Winslet clung to any semblance of common ground she could find to connect with the role. Embracing the challenge, she sought to explore the depths of the character’s psyche, delving into the intricacies that made her both loathsome and fascinating.

Describing her character as an unequivocal villain, utterly consumed by evil, Winslet acknowledged the horrific nature of the role. Despite this, she searched for glimpses of the character’s humanity, seeking moments that portrayed her as a wife and mother, to anchor the role in something relatable.

“She is an outright villain, absolutely evil through and through,” she said. “She’s pretty horrific! So I looked for moments where we got to see a woman who was capable of being a a wife and a mother. That helped me anchor the role in something. But it was mostly being quite mean to people.”

However, Triple 9 wasn’t received well at the box office. The movie went on to make $23 million worldwide. Triple 9 can be rented on Apple TV.
