Hollywood star Adam Driver has made it among some of the best actors of his generation soon after his debut in the industry. Over the years, he has starred in several genres, from comedy and drama to action and horror. The actor first rose to prominence with his role in Judd Apatow’s comedy-drama TV show Girls. Portraying the character of Adam Sackler in the HBO series, he earned three Primetime Emmy nominations.
After starring in the TV series, Driver gained worldwide recognition as the antagonist of the Star Wars sequel trilogy. However, reports have revealed that the Girls star almost said no to the offer due to scheduling conflicts with his HBO TV series.
Adam Driver Almost Rejected His Star Wars Role
In 2014, news outlets revealed that the studio was approaching Adam Driver for the role of villain Kylo Ren in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The actor, who was known for starring in HBO TV series Girls at the time, had reportedly finished filming for it when he received the offer for J.J. Abrams’ Star Wars.
While he had been in talks for the role for quite some time, it still caused a delay in finalizing a decision. There were several negotiations before the actor finally accepted the offer. As per Variety, the delay was caused due to the scheduling conflicts between Girls and Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
The following season of the HBO show and Star Wars both were set to film at the same time in New York and London, respectively. The same concern was also raised regarding the future seasons of the TV series and the future installments in the franchise.
Variety reported the issue was to be resolved with a deal. Driver hopped back and forth to work on both projects on alternate weeks and was able to play both Kylo Ren in the sci-fi movie along with his Girls‘ character, Adam Sackler, a role he was initially reluctant about.
Adam Driver’s Agent Convinced Him to Audition For Girls
Adam Driver had his big break in Judd Apatow’s comedy-drama Girls. He portrayed Adam Sackler, the emotionally unstable boyfriend of the leading character in the series. However, the actor almost lost one of the biggest roles of his career, as he did not want to audition for the show.
After graduating from Juilliard School, the actor pursued a career in theatre as he continued alternating between Broadway and off-Broadway productions. The two-time Oscar nominee was reportedly not very interested in TV productions at the time and denied auditioning for the HBO series.
“I was doing a lot of theater at the time, and I didn’t really watch a lot of TV shows,” he told Screen Rant. The Hungry Hearts star shared that he only auditioned for the role after his agent convinced him to read for Girls. After this, he met Lena Dunham and got the role in the series. Although he was reluctant at first, Driver has admitted that the comedy-drama changed the course of his career.
