Margot Robbie’s film Barbie has done phenomenal business at the international box office so far. It has set many records and has turned out to be one of the most successful films of this year. However, all of this has not come without a huge amount of controversy and backlash from certain quarters on the international stage. Certain countries like Kuwait and Lebanon have banned the film entirely, while many other countries in Southeast Asia have restricted it.
Now another country in Africa has banned it, citing weird and absurd reasons. However, these restrictions in banning won’t have much of an effect on the film’s overall business prospects, as these countries represent a tiny fraction of the international box office. Films that push boundaries and explore new ideas or openly resisted and criticized, and the same has been happening with Greta Gerwig’s magnum opus.
Another Country Bans Margot Robbie’s Barbie
Margot Robbie is making headlines for her newly released Greta Gerwig-directed American fantasy comedy movie Barbie. The star-studded project is doing exceptionally well at the box office and has received overwhelming response and praise from fans and critics alike. The tremendous amount of positive responses the flick earned before its theatrical release was unbelievable.
Robbie is playing the title role in the movie opposite Ryan Gosling, who is depicting the character of Ken, and both actors have done a phenomenal job, which is why fans cannot stop gushing over these two on the internet. Many sequences featuring The Wolf of Wall Street star have gone viral, with people trying to recreate her iconic high heels scene.
Despite the unimaginable box office collection and positive reviews, Gerwig’s latest billion-dollar mark blockbuster Barbie has reportedly been banned in some Middle East countries. Screenings of this record-smashing Warner Bros. film have been halted earlier in Kuwait and Lebanon over concerns about the depiction of susceptible subjects. The movie was initially released in Algeria on July 21. Nevertheless, the North African country, has also barred its theatrical release in cinema, citing “Violations of morals” as the main reason for halting its screening.
According to the latest reports, local site 24H Algeria shared the update this week that the North African country’s Ministry of Culture and Arts had suggested removing the fantasy comedy from their schedules due to the claims that it’s “damaging morals.”
Regardless of the controversies, Greta Gerwig directed the spectacular cinematic film Barbie continued to be hailed by the audience for its over-the-top screenplay, exciting themes, iconic costumes, catchy dialogues, and performances of its stellar cast.
