No doubt, Barbie achieved box office success due to its pre-release hype and marketing efforts, which included brand collaborations and teaser releases. The movie received positive reviews and strong word of mouth, which expanded its audience and played a major role in its box office win.

But, the crippling competition of Barbie literally crushed the movies which were released in a similar instance. From which one of the movies that performed below expectations was Mission: Impossible 7.

Indeed, hopes were high with Tom Cruise’s seventh installment of Mission: Impossible, but unfortunately, Barbie couldn’t let it pass its way.

Released on 21 July, Margot Robbie‘s Barbie proved to be a smash box-office hit to surpass the $1 billion global mark. Released in the same month, that too nine days before, Tom Cruise‘s latest anticipated movie was unable to perform well on the big screen.

Directed by Christopher McQuarrie, the seventh installment of the Mission: Impossible franchise is the most expensive MI film ($290 million). As per Box Office Mojo, it has made $376.26 million at the worldwide box office till now.

Despite this, the film witnessed a massive drop. MI7 didn’t pick up as expected because the wave of Barbie made things worse for the movie.

The breakeven lies between $700-$730 million; after comparing it with the worldwide collection ($376.26 million) against the budget of $290 million – the difference is above $300 million. Clearly, a huge loss!

Even though the Barbie wave is expected to rise, it would not be correct to say that it is one of the most outgrossing movies of 2023 because the Mattel doll-based movie is yet behind MCU’s Avengers (both part and part 2).

In order to reach the Top 10 highest-grossing movies worldwide, Barbie first has to outgross The Avengers (Part 1: $1.52 billion, Part 2: $1.403 billion).

And while Barbie may be partying for now, Marvel Studio could hone in on the upcoming movie The Marvels.

Coming up in November starring Brie Larson (Carol Danvers), Teyonah Parris (Monica Rambeau), Iman Vellani (Kamala Khan), and Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury), this Marvel Cinematic Universe Phase Five movie serves as the sequel to 2019’s Captain Marvel (which made $1.13 billion).

Although Barbie has beaten its first sequel, it’d be interesting to see if it would be able to crush its second sequel too.
