Marvel Studios has got an impressive hold on the box office, thanks to Kevin Feige’s plan of steadily introducing different phases to its loyal audience without ever making his creators or his audience feel exhausted. But the same cannot be said for his television strategy, as Disney+ continues to get flooded with countless Marvel series and spin-offs without much success.
In that regard, Feige can learn a lot from Lucasfilm who seldom skip a beat despite adapting countless stories from the original Star Wars over multiple decades.
After the success of Pedro Pascal’s The Mandalorian, the decision-makers gave the nod to further expand the Star Wars universe through Ahsoka. Early reactions suggest they’ve played yet another masterstroke. In fact, a particular detail in the show has even spiked interest from Doctor Who fans.
How Ahsoka Writers Have Managed to Excite David Tennant’s Doctor Who Fans
Ahsoka, which premiered late in August, focuses on Rosario Dawson‘s Ahsoka Tano, who made her live-action debut in The Mandalorian. In the stand-alone series, the former Jedi Knight tries to unravel mysteries about an emerging threat to a vulnerable galaxy.
One of the biggest selling points of the Dave Filoni-created show is the way it brings back several familiar Star Wars characters at different stages in the series. But Filoni has also incorporated references from other science fiction adventures.
Ahsoka is joined by Professor Huyang, an ancient droid built around 25,020 BBY. For a thousand generations, he taught Jedi younglings how to construct their lightsabers. The brilliant David Tennant first voiced the character in Star Wars: The Clone Wars before reprising the role for the latest hit series.
Tennant has also portrayed fan-favorite the Tenth Doctor, an incarnation of the Doctor, in the British series Doctor Who (2005). But that’s not the only link between the two science fiction shows.
Ahsoka viewers have picked on an interesting reference from Doctor Who. Huyang’s exact origins have always been a mystery, but there was a rumor among the younglings that he arrived in a big blue box. This is understandably (via IMDb) a reference to the blue police call box TARDIS, which is the Doctor’s mode for traveling in time and space.
David Tennant to Return in Doctor Who for 60th Anniversary Specials
Despite Ahsoka’s immense success (the premiere attracted more than 14 million views on Disney+ within its first week), there’s little update on the second season and potential returns of Dawson and Tennant.
However, fans can soon catch Tennant in action in Doctor Who. The Scottish actor, who played the tenth version of Doctor between 2005 and 2010, will lead three-anniversary special episodes of the long-running sci-fi series.
Interestingly, Tennant will be the 14th Doctor for the 60th-anniversary specials and will reunite with Donna Noble (Catherine Tate), one of the doctor’s former companions. She refers to the TARDIS in the latest trailer.
