Marvel Studios’ The Marvels is not that far from releasing worldwide and the director has addressed the major issue that’s got big filmmakers spooked as of late.
Given the lackluster performance of major superhero films this year, former Marvel asset James Gunn and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse producers Christopher Miller and Phil Lord spoke about the “superhero fatigue.”
Nia DaCosta, who is spearheading The Marvels, also worked alongside Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck on Captain Marvel. In a conversation with Total Film, she too, has weighed in on the fatigue and shared how the upcoming superhero spectacle would be different.
The Marvels Is Wacky, Says Nia DaCosta
Marvel’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Thor: Love and Thunder, and this year’s Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania haven’t been able to get the desired reception.
James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 brought some respite, and now Nia DaCosta is looking to ride on that by adding a “silly” tone to the film.
“The Marvels is really wacky, and silly. The worlds we go to in this movie are worlds unlike others you’ve seen in the MCU. Bright worlds that you haven’t seen before,” she has told Total Film magazine.
The film has raised the financing stakes to $500 million from Captain Marvel’s $350 million.
Nia DaCosta On The Audience’s Mood
Brie Larson’s The Marvels will see her Carol Danvers teaming up with the much-awaited entry of Iman Vellani’s Ms. Marvel and Teyonah Parris’ Photon to take on Zawe Ashton‘s Dar-Benn.
As Marvel is looking to recreate the formula that worked with James Gunn’s threequel, DaCosta tells Total Film –
“I think superhero fatigue absolutely exists.”

Outside of The Avengers team-up, Marvel has had success with films like Captain America: Civil War (2016) which fit multiple heroes in a 2 hr and 27 min time frame, and Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021) with a minute more.
She once told Inverse –
“It’s interesting, and something we thought about and worked through a lot, which was how do we get each of these really big, exciting heroes space in a two-hour film? A lot of what we’ve been thinking about is ‘what part of the journey do we need to see for each of them?’ How do we honor the part of the story they’re at in terms of the canon?”
A lot will be answered in Total Film’s latest issue which is expected to arrive on August 17.
