Akira Toriyama Helped Design Dragon Quest

Apart from creating vast fictitious worlds for the renowned Dragon Ball anime series, such as Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball Super, Toriyama excelled in character design, having designed numerous characters for the video game Dragon Quest. Dragon Quest is a series of role-playing video games.

A plethora of manga, anime, and books have also been released under the franchise, and there is a corresponding adaptation for almost every game in the main series. The original Dragon Quest video game needed artwork to set itself apart from other role-playing games of the era, so Toriyama was hired to depict the monsters and characters.

Pokémon is one of the most successful media properties ever, with anime series, films, and products all selling well. Its spin-off game, Pokémon GO, has been downloaded on mobile devices more than one billion times globally. According to Video Games Sales Wiki, as of March 2023, the Pokémon video game series had sold over 480 million copies worldwide.

Although the storylines of both Dragon Quest and Pokémon are entirely different, the creatures shown in both gaming series are unquestionably similar, which led many fans to believe that the Pokémon gaming franchise copied the character designs from Akira Toriyama’s Dragon Quest and used them in their own gaming world.
