While Hollywood has several incredible horror features already, a yet-to-be-released horror movie promises no less than a thrilling horror experience by taping into the essence of Tom Cruise’s one of the most iconic movies. Directed, written, and co-produced by Zach Cregger, Weapons, is being described as tonally similar to Cruise’s 1999 drama film Magnolia.
Although, the movie’s prospects certainly seem high already, what makes it even more thrilling is that similar to Cruise’s epic, Weapons too appears to be eyeing an incredible cast. After roping in the likes of Josh Brolin and Julia Garner, Alden Ehrenreich is the newest edition to the cast.
Alden Ehrenreich Joins Josh Brolin-starrer Weapons
One would argue that Tom Cruise has been in several incredible movies, many of whom deserve a separate place in Hollywood’s Hall of Fame. Yet, Magnolia by Paul Thomas Anderson will forever have an individual fan base, not because of its ensemble cast, but because of its complex and interconnected narrative tying several storylines together.
And to have a horror flick made in a similar vein by an acclaimed director like Zach Cregger promises a chilling ride for the audience. After casting Josh Brolin and Julia Garner in unnamed roles, Alden Ehrenreich is the recent star to join the cast (via Deadline).
Ehrenreich is perhaps known best for starring as the young Han Solo in 2018’s not-so-well-received Han Solo: A Star Wars Story. After brief appearances in series like Supernatural and movies like Twixt, the actor most recently was in the news for his role in Christopher Nolan’s Oscar-winning flick Oppenheimer and Netflix’s Fair Play. He is also slated to star in Marvel’s Ironheart in the lead.
Zach Cregger’s Weapons: All We Know About It
Zack Cregger’s first movie was Barbarian. Written and directed by him, the horror thriller went on to earn $45 million worldwide (via Box Office Mojo), against a budget of $4.5 million (via Vulture). And so, just a year ago, the director had studios scrambling for his second feature, Weapons, despite nobody wanting to make his first film.
After a frenetic auction, Weapons was sold to New Line for a huge sum of $38 million, with Cregger getting $5 million for directing and $10 million for writing the script and co-producing along with his Barbarian producing team (via Deadline).
Other than it being tonally inspired by Tom Cruise’s Magnolia, the details of the upcoming flick have been scarce. Cregger, in an interview in 2022 with GQ, did seem to hint that he had written Weapons keeping the end in mind for he had loved the ending.
Other than Josh Brolin, and upcoming Marvel stars Julia Garner and Alden Ehrenreich, no other cast members have been announced. The release date of the film is yet to be revealed.
Barbarian can be streamed on HBO Max.
