Veteran director Zack Snyder had a not-so-great 2023 due to the almost hilarious failure of his magnum opus Rebel Moon: Part One. With the director working on the movie for almost a decade, it all came down to Netflix views and the total runtime of the film.
Well, in a recent interview, Snyder tried to defend his movie by using math. Calculating the views and multiplying that with the average movie ticket, Zack Snyder claims that Rebel Moon: Part One earned more than Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie’s Barbie!
Zack Snyder Tried To Defend Rebel Moon Using Math!
Math has always been a controversial approach to solving anything non-scientific. Talking about how Zack Snyder calculated Rebel Moon’s earnings if the movie were released in theaters instead of Netflix, the director thought he made sense, but he actually didn’t.
In an interview with Joe Rogan on The Joe Rogan Experience, Zack Snyder and Rogan talked about Snyder’s life and career. With the failure of Rebel Moon: Part One, Snyder revealed that the movie had already earned more money than Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie’s Barbie if it were released in theaters instead of Netflix!
“Say right now [Rebel Moon] is almost at 90 million views, right? They assume two viewers per screening, right? That’s the kind of math. So you think if that movie was in the theater as a distribution model, that’s like 160,000,000 people supposedly watching based on that math.”
He further continued,
“160,000,000 people at $10 a ticket would be…what is that math? I don’t know. 160,000,000 times ten. That’s 1.6 billion. So more people probably saw ‘Rebel Moon’ than saw ‘Barbie’ in the theater, right?”
Well, we don’t want to be those guys, but the math is simply wrong. Secondly, Netflix has changed the way it counts views… again. Netflix uses the formula ‘one view equals total viewing hours, divided by length of show’ and so as per Snyder’s calculations, only 90 million people watched the film.
Fans React To Zack Snyder’s Statements
Although Snyder has an entire army to himself, this time, the people turned around. While many of his fans defended the veteran director in his statements, others jumped up at the opportunity. Not demeaning or offending the director, but the people simply joked about how Barbie earned $1.4 billion and has proof to show for it… unlike Rebel Moon.
say that to Barbie’s billion dollar box office numbers

By this logic, Red Notice is the highest grossing movie ever.

His math was spitballed, and likely not accurate, but his point was maybe true. Barbie made a lot more money but $$$ doesn’t equal unique viewers. Netflix has a much larger reach overall than a 2 month theater window.

All in all, Zack Snyder may be right in his logic or maybe wrong in him not assuming certain scenarios. It is a terrible tragedy, however, that Rebel Moon: Part One was a failure. The film received a rating of 5.6/10 on IMDB and a record-breaking low of 21% on Rotten Tomatoes. As mentioned in the discussion above, Rebel Moon: Part One – A Child of Fire is available to stream on Netflix around the world.
