Fans have engaged in this age-old debate which started in the early days of comic books regarding who the most powerful superhero truly is. Among Marvel fans, Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man is a prominent contender, not because of his superpowers, but due to his unmatched genius. Looking back, Tony Stark was only a mortal human surrounded by powerful superheroes, yet he managed to achieve incredible feats with his suit.

Robert Downey Jr. played Tony Stark for the ninth time in Avengers: Infinity War. The movie delivered a shocking blow to fans as half of the Earth’s population, along with some of their favorite superheroes, just vanished into thin air. It was a bold step for any movie, as it showed the Avengers failing to stop Thanos. However, the movie also depicted Iron Man at his fighting best when he engaged in a one-on-one battle with Thanos.

During the intense battle scene on the planet Titan, Thanos took down the superhero team-up, which included the Guardians of the Galaxy, Spider-Man, and Doctor Strange. However, Tony Stark put up a great fight, even managing to draw blood from the Mad Titan with a powerful blow. In response to Iron Man’s blow, Thanos retorted, “All that for a drop of blood.”

Later in the movie, Thor also succeeds in hurting Thanos. However, the power difference between Thor, a God, and Stark, a human, made Stark’s achievement all the more powerful. Iron Man’s advanced suit proved a tough challenge for Thanos, but eventually, Thanos emerged victorious by impaling Tony Stark with his own weapon. This led Doctor Strange to give up the Time Stone in an effort to save Stark.

While some fans credit Ant-Man (and, amusingly, even a rat) for coming up with the time travel idea that saved the universe, Tony Stark had been developing the technology for years. He later found some inspiration after looking at a photo of Peter Parker and cracked the code for time travel. Robert Downey Jr. in his tenth and final appearance as Iron Man in Avengers: Endgame, once again proved that his greatest power was his brains.

In the movie’s climactic battle, Iron Man surpassed all the other Earth’s mighty heroes in single-handedly defeating the entire army of Thanos, using the Infinity stones. He made the ultimate sacrifice, giving his life in the process even after knowing about the consequences. Tony Stark’s sacrifice is considered the most powerful moment in Iron Man’s arc, and even in the entire Marvel franchise.

Tony Stark went down as a great hero, and fans worldwide regard him as one of the greatest superheroes in cinematic history. The movie went on to gross $2.799 billion, becoming the second highest-grossing film of all time. Both Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame are available for streaming on Disney+.
