Ever since James Gunn took over as DC head, there has been a notable shift in the composition of the franchise. First, there was the shocking revelation that Henry Cavill will no longer continue in his role as Superman. Then, there were rumors about Gal Gadot’s possible exit from the DCU. These decisions seem to have been part of a larger picture that James Gunn wanted to paint for the franchise to give it a facelift.

However, ardent fans of DC were vocal in their dissent towards the director for initiating these changes that saw the ousting of one of the greatest DC superheroes. Gunn, for his part, has stoically defended his stance amidst the backlash by assuring the return of a major player from the DC Extended Universe.

“Harley Quinn Will Be Back”, Says James Gunn

With so many tangible changes already taking place during James Gunn’s short tenure as DC head, there are speculations about the future of many DC characters and their role in taking forward the DCU. Amidst these talks, Gunn has hinted that there is a definite possibility that Suicide Squad’s popular anti-hero, Harley Quinn could be one of the characters to enter the rebooted franchise. Along with Margot Robbie who plays Harley Quinn, the Guardians of the Galaxy director also hinted at Viola Davis’ Amanda Waller and Sean Gunn’s Weasel from The Suicide Squad as the other characters from the DCEU who could be part of the new lineup of DCU films.

Many fans could argue that this information may not hold water as Gunn, who had originally had visions for Henry Cavill’s Superman, after taking over as DC head, changed his mind about the character’s future. His confirmation of collaborating with Margot Robbie could also be related to working on a film outside of DC. It remains to be seen how this information pans out.

There are also talks that Harley Quinn may feature in a potential project on the DC villain Bloodsport, which is to be headlined by Idris Elba. The ending in Suicide Squad indicated that these two characters could end up working together. Elba too sent out a few teasers in his comments about this collaboration, saying that he has “a really big thing cooking for a DC return”. If this promising project materializes along with Harley Quinn’s presence in other DC films, it will surely be a well-deserved treat for fans.
