Warner Bros.’ Aquaman And The Lost Kingdom starring Jason Momoa has failed to match the level of the first film which grossed $1.14 billion globally. Aquaman 2 which debuted with a 39% rating on Rotten Tomatoes had several issues that hampered its box office collection.
The movie, which was made with a budget of $205 million debuted with $38 million for the 4-Day Christmas weekend per Deadline and suddenly dropped to $23 million for its 4-Day New Year’s weekend at the domestic box office. Meanwhile, the movie now has a digital release date which will be streamed on HBO Max.
Aquaman And The Lost Kingdom is Set For Its Digital Release
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom was DC’s latest superhero film but DC fans have not shown up in the theaters to the expectations. And, as of now, the film has grossed $378 million worldwide. The film is still running in theaters and the total mark could stretch up to $400 million globally.
Directed by James Wan, this film starring Jason Momoa as Arthur Curry (aka Aquaman) alongside Patrick Wilson, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, and Nicole Kidman struggled at the box office for many reasons. One of them is “superhero fatigue.” And the other being reshoots. DCEU star Dolph Lundgren expressed his disappointment with the alteration made in the theatrical version while praising the original director’s cut.
In an interview with Comic Book, Lundgren said:
“I was just disappointed for the moviegoers, because I thought the original script was great and the original cut — I saw a little bit of it, it was really good, so I didn’t see any reason to start reshooting and reshaping the story, which obviously led to disappointment in the moviegoers and not just me.”
Also, earlier fans got to watch the DC movies throughout 2022 and 2023 on HBO Max, just three months after its theatrical release. And this time as well, fans are waiting for the digital release of Aquaman 2 to arrive on MAX to watch it at no extra cost. And finally, they can watch it digitally from January 23rd.
Jason Momoa Hinted DC Exit After Aquaman 2
Reports hinted that Jason Momoa will no longer reprise his role as Aquaman for DC Studios. There have been talks between him and James Gunn’s team on his potential portrayal of the renowned DC anti-hero Lobo in an upcoming movie. Speculations suggested that he might assume this role as soon as 2025, with a projected appearance in Superman: Legacy.
Speaking to Fandango, Momoa stated whether he is in discussion to play Lobo in Gunn’s DCU or not.
“So, Lobo… I used to collect comics and I don’t do so much anymore, but he was always my favorite. And I’ve always wanted to play Lobo because I’m like, ‘Hello?.’ It’s pretty perfect. It’s the perfect role. I mean, listen, if they call me and ask me to play it? It’s a f*** yeah. But, I mean, that’s a guarantee. So, you don’t have to worry about that. But, I haven’t received that call. So, I don’t want to put any fake news out there but if they ever call me and ask me to play, or ask me to audition, I’m there.”
It is still not clear whether Gunn intends to bring Momoa to portray Lobo in his DCU. For now, Momoa has other films in the pipeline, including the drama In the Hand of Dante and the live-action adaptation of the popular video game Minecraft. In the meantime, Momoa is set to star in the drama In the Hand of Dante and the upcoming Warner Bros. pic, Minecraft, which is based on the eponymous sandbox video game.
