Nic Pizzolatto gets roasted by fans after he made snarky comments on social media about the latest season of True Detective helmed by Issa López. True Detective: Night Country is the first installment that Pizzolatto claimed he had no involvement with.
López, on the other hand, co-wrote and helmed all six episodes of the new season. Pizzolatto was still an executive producer on the show when he announced that he had nothing to do with the fourth season.
Nic Pizzolatto’s Controversial Remarks About True Detective Season 4
In a now-deleted social media post, Nic Pizzolatto responded to a fan comment talking about Season 4’s plot and called it “so stupid” while in another remark, he claimed no participation in writing the story: “I certainly did not have any input on this story or anything else. Can’t blame me.”

Issa López took over the franchise and created True Detective: Night Country. In her interview with Games Radar, she shared her writing process and inspiration for the season.
“When you start writing a murder mystery, you’d better know who the killer is… Otherwise, you’re going to twist something to make it work. You know how the crime is exposed at the very beginning, and what you need to discover is what your detectives need to discover to get to the end. The rest is just filled-in blanks, and filling in the blanks is fun!”
Pizzolatto heavily criticized López’s work in a public platform. The showrunner reacted to it via Vulture:
“I believe that every storyteller has a very specific, peculiar, and unique relation to the stories they create, and whatever his reactions are, he’s entitled to them. That’s his prerogative.”
She further explained how the latest season is different from the previous ones, and instead of directly attacking Pizzolatto, she chose to respond with grace and humility.
“I wrote this with profound love for the work he made and love for the people that loved it. And it is a reinvention, and it is different, and it’s done with the idea of sitting down around the fire, and [let’s] have some fun and have some feelings and have some thoughts. And anybody that wants to join is welcome.”
Pizzolatto has not yet commented on López’s statement or his own remarks on the showrunner’s creative direction of the show.

Issa Lopez responded to Nic's criticism more respectfully than Nic ever did in the past few weeks. The season isn't perfect but I respect Lopez's professionalism with her work in True Detective pic.twitter.com/i5xW1vwEmp

A dormant fucking franchise that was dead in the water for years with no sense of direction? That franchise that she breathed new life into?

Poor little white man can't make space for women/women of color/indigenous women. Poor baby.

López once fought back trolls who continue to diss True Detective: Night Country, addressing their review-bombing practices that dragged down the stellar reviews and ratings.
“The bros and hardcore fanboys of [Season 1] have made it a mission to drag the rating down, and it’s kind of sad, considering all the 5-star ones.”
True Detective: Night Country stars Jodie Foster and Kali Reis, and it is available to stream via HBO Max.
