Issa López took over the franchise and created True Detective: Night Country. In her interview with Games Radar, she shared her writing process and inspiration for the season.

When you start writing a murder mystery, you’d better know who the killer is… Otherwise, you’re going to twist something to make it work. You know how the crime is exposed at the very beginning, and what you need to discover is what your detectives need to discover to get to the end. The rest is just filled-in blanks, and filling in the blanks is fun!

Pizzolatto heavily criticized López’s work in a public platform. The showrunner reacted to it via Vulture:

I believe that every storyteller has a very specific, peculiar, and unique relation to the stories they create, and whatever his reactions are, he’s entitled to them. That’s his prerogative.”

She further explained how the latest season is different from the previous ones, and instead of directly attacking Pizzolatto, she chose to respond with grace and humility.

I wrote this with profound love for the work he made and love for the people that loved it. And it is a reinvention, and it is different, and it’s done with the idea of sitting down around the fire, and [let’s] have some fun and have some feelings and have some thoughts. And anybody that wants to join is welcome.”

Pizzolatto has not yet commented on López’s statement or his own remarks on the showrunner’s creative direction of the show.
