Recently, video games, especially RPGs, have become much more exquisite than their predecessors. Many titles, like The Elder Scrolls V, have been long hailed as one of the best in the genre and have set an incredibly high ceiling for their contemporaries and future titles.

But it feels like Bioware is taking things one step further with its upcoming Dragon Age title for the title has been building ever since it was featured in the 2024 Xbox Games Showcase, and there is still a full-length reveal for it scheduled on June 11, 4:00 pm BST. Ahead of that, a content creator and YouTuber, Kala Elizabeth, has shared exciting news about the upcoming title on her Twitter account.

The Inquisitor, or the playable character of the video game series, has been a key offering. But, customizing that character and choosing between critical decisions that affect the game’s opening hours will either alleviate a problem faced by another recent RPG that was ambitious or cause many more problems for players.

Starfield Was Criticized for Its Opening, and The Veilguard Approach May Help Avoid Something Like That

Can the upcoming Dragon Age title pull off something of this scale?
Can the upcoming Dragon Age title pull off something of this scale?

Alarmingly, when Bethesda’s most ambitious game came out, almost a quarter of players couldn’t make it past the tutorial section. This caused a lot of negative word of mouth for the title. Suppose The Veilguard’s approach is executed so that significant choices make a noticeable difference in the prologue. In that case, it will give the player much control over the game’s opening hours.

While there were games like Cyberpunk 2077 from CD Projekt Red, which offered the player several origin stories to choose from, they didn’t influence the game’s grand narrative. And if The Veilguard manages to reflect starting choices later, it could make for a good mechanic.

However, this could also be a bomb if not executed properly. Without noticeable impacts on the Inquisitor’s journey despite the different choices, players will leave no chance to remind the video game company of what they promised and how it differed from the final product.

While the mechanic seems promising, it could also mean taking a risk and risking the game being criticized. Do you think this mechanic could make a profound impact? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
