Back in 1981, Francis Ford Coppola risked everything with his musical One from the Heart to challenge the studios’ ways and revolutionize cinema. Unfortunately, it ended up being a box office disaster, which pushed him into a decade of financial turmoil. Moreover, its failure also led to Megalopolis, whose script he conceived around the same time period, being put on ice.

Since then, the legendary filmmaker has been working tirelessly to get his dream project greenlit, but the corporate heads at studios never gave it the get-go following its experimental nature. Fast forward to 2019, reports revealed that Coppola was self-financing the $120 million film and the teaser released for the sci-fi drama has left fans in awe, which rivals the likes of Interstellar and Dune.

Set to debut at the 77th Cannes Film Festival 2024, Francis Ford Coppola finally released the teaser for the upcoming sci-fi epic, starring Adam Driver and Nathalie Emmanuel. Unsurprisingly, fans are left in awe following the beauty of the teaser. While not much is known about its narrative, which will see an idealistic architect trying to rebuild the Metropolis from ruins, the visuals depicted in the teaser are arguably some of the best in recent times.

Whether it be Dune or any of Christopher Nolan’s acclaimed releases, including the likes of Interstellar or Inception, Megalopolis doesn’t fall short visually of other heavy hitters in the game.

Taking to X, many have been singing praises about its stylized visuals, which is reminiscent of his previous passionate film One from the Heart, which too was made to challenge the studios’ ways.

Even though Coppola has been successful in bringing his decades-long vision to life, his challenges are yet far from over, as the sci-fi drama has been struggling to find distributors.

Megalopolis struggles to find distributors for being too experimental

When it comes to blockbusters, studio heads often have the last say on the project, which, in many cases, ends up being detrimental to the filmmakers’ original vision. Moreover, since the boom of modern superhero films, studios have opted to play it safe with their bigger releases, but 2023 served as a welcome change.

Unfortunately, in The Godfather director’s case, his self-funded film, which cost him a significant portion of his wine empire, has been facing an uphill battle to find a distribution partner. Even though various studio execs from Warner Bros., Disney, Netflix, and Paramount were spotted during the buyer’s event, per THR, not many are inclined toward Coppola’s grand marketing plan for the film.

While his reported plans for its marketing push involved an estimated $100M, which is not out of the ordinary in cases of big-budget blockbusters, studios deemed it too “experimental” for this spent.

With the film finally set to unveil at Cannes this year, fans will hope this isn’t the repeat of One From the Heart, and Megalopolis succeeds in cementing itself as a modern-day classic.

Megalopolis will debut at the Cannes Film Festival on 17 May 2024.
