Known for portraying Queen Ramonda in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Angela Bassett earned her second Oscar nomination for the 2022 film Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Nominated alongside Stephanie Hsu and Jamie Lee Curtis from Everything Everywhere All at Once, Hong Chau from The Whale, and Kerry Condon from The Banshees of Inisherin, Bassett was considered a frontrunner to bag the award, especially after winning a BAFTA and a Golden Globe for the 2022 film.
Alongside Bassett, Hsu was also expected to be a leading contender. However, despite the anticipation surrounding their performances, they lost the Oscar to Curtis. As the industry once again prepares to honor its finest craft at the 96th Academy Awards and Bassett being awarded the Academy Honorary Award, the actress has recently voiced her disappointment with the Oscar snub.
Angela Bassett Gets Candid About Her Oscar Snub For Black Panther 2
Angela Bassett, who recently received her honorary Academy Award, joined Oprah Winfrey on her OWN Spotlight series. And during her conversation with Winfrey, the actress got candid about losing the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress at the 95th Academy Awards.
“I just knew your name was going to be called,” Oprah Winfrey shared. And the 65-year-old actress recalled being “gobsmacked” by the snub, as she shared that although she handled it very well, she was still disappointed. Bassett told Oprah Winfrey,
“I was gobsmacked!—I thought I handled it very well. That was my intention, to handle it very well. It was, of course, a supreme disappointment, and disappointment is human. So I thought, yes, I was disappointed and I handled it like a human being.”
The Black Panther star further emphasizes the significance of maintaining grace and composure in the face of disappointment. She also highlights the importance of setting an example for her children, who were with her at the 2023 award ceremony, by demonstrating resilience and positivity, despite the setback.
“We’re going to smile, we’re going to be gracious, we’re going to be kind, we’re going to party anyway,” Bassett said of handling such disappointing experiences in life. Before, Wakanda Forever, Bassett earned an Oscar nomination for the 1993 biographical film, What’s Love Got to Do with It.
