Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer has dominated mainstream media with the riveting hype surrounding the movie’s race at the Oscars. Of course, Nolan’s 2023 Cillian Murphy-led movie has the inherited prowess as being another Nolan masterpiece, but Oscar could be surprising at times.
Primarily, the headline award for the Best Picture race has been even more complex. While Nolan fans have almost certainly concluded that Oppenheimer would be the unanimous winner, a new report might be upsetting for them to digest. Anonymous Oscar voters recently revealed that one unlikely movie might bag the Best Picture award, surpassing the other nine contenders.
Anonymous Oscar Voter Revealed A Surprising Twist In The Best Picture Category
The official voting window for the Academy Awards was closed on Tuesday, creating more hype and the rise of speculations. With the fascinating hype, anonymous Oscar voters often propel the heat with their interviews via Brutally Honest Oscar Ballots— Academy voters shed light on the behind-the-scenes scenario of the Oscar contenders revealing the advantages and disadvantages of individual nominees.
While it is against the regulations of the Academy, the practice has been around for decades. This year, the Brutally Honest Oscar Ballots have revealed the most upsetting news for Oppenheimer fans.
While Oppenheimer dominated the Oscars with 13 nods, a holocaust movie, The Zone of Interest, caught the interest of voters, per the anonymous voters. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter’s Scott Feinberg, an anonymous voter revealed why Jonathan Glazer’s A24 film might just grab the headline award.
“But for me, choosing between Oppenheimer and The Zone of Interest was so hard. Oppenheimer is a movie that advanced cinema — with the invention of a new film stock, the use of Imax cameras in close-up and dialogue scenes, and the marriage of image and sound. This is the sort of cinematic experience that you live for if you love movies; it makes me sad that one day I’m going to die because I won’t get to see movies like this. But no movie made me feel like Zone of Interest. That is what filmmaking is supposed to do.”
Also, Variety’s own Brutally Honest Oscar Ballots interview has revealed that two out of its five voters who interviewed named The Zone of Interest as their prime choice for Best Picture, the same as Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer.
Anonymous Oscar Voters Revealed Christopher Nolan’s Best Director Award Fate
The Zone of Interest, based on Martin Amis’ book of the same name starring Anatomy of a Fall (also in the Oscar race in five categories including Best Picture and Best Director) actor Sandra Hüller secured five Oscar nods. While anonymous voters have twisted the very prediction of Oppenheimer grabbing the headline award, now fans may wonder what about the Best Director?
Nolan’s cinematic journey has been fascinating, and he has produced at least a few Oscar-worthy movies in his glorious career. However, the director is yet to hold the gold in his hand. Oppenheimer could favor the director’s win this time, and the voter who interviewed with THR is certainly in agreement with that.
The voter called Oppenheimer “the most monumental achievement” of Nolan’s career. Further, they were keen on justifying that Nolan’s win for Best Director was “an easy one.” revealing that he has the upper hand over his fellow nominees, including Martin Scorsese, Yorgos Lanthimos, Justine Triet, and Glazer.
The Zone of Interest is currently showing in select theaters. Oppenheimer is available to stream on Peacock.
