While the films are remembered and cherished for the experience they provided and the vision behind them, they are not free from criticism. One of the criticisms included Infinity War glossing over how Thanos got the first Infinity Stone (the power stone). However, the scene was reportedly shot but deleted and there is still a way fans might get to see it.

Why Did Anthony And Joe Russo Cut The Nova Corps Sequence?

Anthony and Joe Russo gave one of the MCU’s best villains in the form of Thanos in the Avengers films. Introduced in 2012’s The Avengers, the villain was teased for years and the ‘Infinity Saga’ built up to the Avengers finally facing this formidable foe who aims to eliminate half of the world’s population. Josh Brolin’s performance only added to the menacing villain.

The opening of Avengers: Infinity War began with Thanos having destroyed the spaceship containing Asgardian survivors and having a battle with the Hulk, Thor, and Loki. Thanos already had the Power Stone at this point, which he apparently took from the Nova Corps after destroying their home planet Xandar. This scene, however, was not shown in the film.

But Anthony and Joe Russo had reportedly filmed the sequence but had to delete it due to runtime issues. According to Jim Starlin, the comic book artist who created Thanos, Anthony and Joe Russo had crafted a 45-minute sequence detailing Thanos’ battle with the Nova Corps. He told to Near Mint Condition,

“When I was on the set, [writers Christopher] Markus and [Stephen] McFeely told me everything, what they were doing in the two movies…And so for a year-and-a-half, I had to keep my mouth shut…About a month before the movie came out, I got an email or something from Joe saying, ‘The 45 minutes of Thanos that we had at the beginning of Infinity War, we had it cut.’…They shot it, but they never wanted to spend the money on the effects and they didn’t want the movie to be as long as the second one [Endgame] was.”

Starlin mentioned that he was aware of the sequence’s existence as he was kept in the loop by screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely.

How Can Fans See The Deleted Nova Corps Scene?

While the opening of Avengers: Infinity War is harrowing in its way as it opens with the destruction of Asgardian survivors, the Nova Corps battle sequence as Xandar would have given a great explanation for how Thanos got the power stone, as well as give an exhilarating action sequence as the opening.

One of the biggest criticisms of the film from fans, who otherwise find them perfect, was this deleted scene. A director’s cut of Anthony and Joe Russo’s Avengers: Infinity War, much like Zack Snyder’s Justice League could potentially include this scene and finally give the fans something more to look forward to.

If not a director’s cut, which is far from possible, a re-release could also solve this problem. It has been five years since the film was released and with Deadpool 3 touted to be the only theatrical release from Marvel this year, An Infinity War re-release would be the perfect way to include the Nova Corps sequence.
