And the Oscar-nominated actor Colin Farrell, who co-starred alongside Cruise in the 2002 sci-fi action film Minority Report, also found himself caught in the whirlwind of Cruise’s relentless pursuit of perfection.
The actor recalled witnessing the ultra-perfectionist side of the action star while working on the movie as he shared that he was amazed at how competitive and engaged Cruise could get while starring in Steven Spielberg’s sci-fi action movie.
Colin Farrell Reflected on Working With Tom Cruise in Minority Report
Directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Tom Cruise in the lead, Minority Report is set in the future where crimes are predicted and prevented before they occur. Sharing the screen with Cruise, Colin Farrell landed the role of a Department of Justice agent Danny Witmer in the movie.
Farrell, who was still making his way into the film industry, was surprised by the level of perfection his co-star sought while working on a movie. The Batman star recalled witnessing the Mission Impossible star’s on-set behavior in an interview with Yahoo Entertainment,
I was 24 or 25 and it was my third or fourth film, and I was just going, ‘What the hell?’ You know, (Cruise is) very competitive and very physically engaged.
He also shared that Cruise did not hesitate to affirm an active atmosphere on the film set. “I remember him walking on the set and screaming, ‘Are we making an action movie? Then why don’t I hear action?” he recalled.
In addition to discussing Minority Report, Farrell also shared his thoughts on the extreme stunts of his former co-star. Reflecting on his plane stunt in Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, the Voyagers actor said, “I mean, that’s mental illness,” asserting that he views it not as an act of bravery but rather as a display of extreme risk-taking.
Colin Farrell Revealed His Surprise Casting in Minority Report
Although he was cast as Danny Witmer, Colin Farrell was not the first choice to play the character. During his conversation with Yahoo Entertainment, he shared that Matt Damon was initially set to play the role in the sci-fi action film. However, he had to withdraw due to scheduling conflicts.
“I think Matt Damon was supposed to do the role, originally,” he said before adding, “And I think there was some clash with his schedule.” He shared that he was surprised when his agent told him that Steven Spielberg wanted to meet him.
“I had grown up watching Jaws and Close Encounters and Indiana Jones,” he said before further stating, “We sat down and we talked, and I shared a sardine sandwich with him, which was enough for me.” He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to meet the filmmaker.
He emphasized his feelings stating that even if he didn’t land the role, the encounter was a memorable moment in itself. Despite not being the first choice to play the character, Farrell earned praise for his performance, and the film has since been regarded as one of his standout performances.
