Argylle is an upcoming spy action comedy film both directed and produced by Matthew Vaughn and written by Jason Fuchs. The film features a great cast, including Henry Cavill, Bryce Dallas Howard, Sam Rockwell, Bryan Cranston, Catherine O’Hara, Dua Lipa, Ariana DeBose, John Cena, and Samuel L. Jackson. Produced by Marv Studios and Apple Studios, the movie is set to premiere on February 2, 2024, exclusively on Apple TV+.

The film initially seemed to be based on a novel by a debut author named Elly Conway. But the trailer and official movie synopsis have revealed that Conway is also a character in the film. It’s unclear if this character is based on a real person or whether it is entirely fictional.

The plot description of Argylle reads (as per IMDb):

“Bryce Dallas Howard is Elly Conway, the reclusive author of a series of best-selling espionage novels, whose idea of bliss is a night at home with her computer and her cat, Alfie. But when the plots of Elly’s fictional books—which center on secret agent Argylle and his mission to unravel a global spy syndicate—begin to mirror the covert actions of a real-life spy organization, quiet evenings at home become a thing of the past.”

The plot of Argylle revolves around author Elly Conway, portrayed by Bryce Dallas Howard, known for her spy novels featuring the character Argylle, played by Henry Cavill.

Elly’s life takes an unexpected turn when she meets a stranger named Aiden, played by Sam Rockwell on a train, which leads her into a world of spies and murder.

Her novels, aligned with actual elements of real spy missions, attracted the attention of various interested parties, including a villainous character played by Bryan Cranston. This clash of fiction and reality sets the stage for a thrilling and action-packed story.

However, plenty of other elements are kept under wraps, including what roles actors Ariana DeBose and Samuel L. Jackson would play. No doubt, according to the trailer, the film aligns with Matthew Vaughn’s signature style of combining intense action sequences with sharp humor. But it differs from his previous works like Kingsman films and Kick-Ass.

Can Henry Cavill’s Argylle Compete With James Bond?

The debate over who’s the better spy or action hero, Jason Bourne or James Bond, is a common topic among fans. And now it is said that the upcoming Argylle aims at 007. Yes, it’s right that director Matthew Vaughn wanted to create a James Bond-style movie, which is evident in his previous works and continues in his upcoming film Argylle too.

Remember the interview, when asked about his interest in directing a James Bond film (given his track record in spy films), the director responded to Screen Rant:

“More important, I don’t think the Bond people would touch me with a stick. They don’t like me. You know, to be blunt. I love Bond. It’s obviously a huge influence on me. Argylle… just wait until you see Argylle.”

Vaughn also noted that if he were to direct a James Bond movie, Henry Cavill would be his top choice for the role:

“Henry Cavill, that man was born to play Bond. When you see how he is in this film, I was just like, wow, this guy is everything you’d imagine Bond to have been, or be.”

The Man of Steal star has been considered for the role of James Bond for many years, first when he was too young and now when he’s in his prime age for the role.

Cavill portrays a fictional spy similar to 007 in the upcoming spy film. But in no way they are similar, and there’s no speculation whether the character will be a James Bond killer (like Jason Bourne).
