Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito have perhaps one of Hollywood’s most underrated friendships. The two stars also happen to be the most recognizable faces born out of the industry in the ’80s and ’90s. After appearing together in films like Twins and Junior together, Schwarzenegger became quite popular for his comedic timing, a strong suit that became more pronounced in the presence of the equally impressionistic comedian, DeVito. Soon, the pair would go around singing high praises of each other and pulling even more pranks until their laughs infected not only those they surround but the whole fandom that has come to know and love these two icons of Hollywood.

Rarely has it ever occurred that one finds the opportunity to embarrass their best friend publicly and yet deliberately hold back on getting a few good laughs at the expense of the other’s misery. The same applies to Hollywood figures like Arnold Schwarzenegger as well, especially when he has Danny DeVito as one of his closest chums. The latter, known for his incredible energy, an ever-happy face, and an overtly likable disposition, once shared how Schwarzenegger’s $13 million-worth California residence is often closer to resembling a zoo than a home.

In an interview with The Sunday Times, DeVito revealed:

“The animals just roam around all over the place — they’re coming to getcha! Ha ha! It’s, like, ‘What’s that?’ ‘Oh, it’s a horse.’ ‘A HORSE?!’ Arnold loves his animals, and he still smokes his stogies.”

On the morning on March 16, 2020, while the pandemic still raged across the world, Arnold Schwarzenegger shared a video on Twitter with his pet horse, Whiskey, and donkey, Lulu, by his side. As he advised people to stay indoors and take precautions against COVID-19, he kept feeding his two companions carrots while playfully tackling Whiskey and showering the two with love. As expected, the video went viral.

Arnold Schwarzenegger & Danny DeVito’s Prank Compilation

It has been a friendship spanning almost four decades and it would be incomplete if there weren’t a few hazardous pranks pulled along the way. And when it involves an easy target like the ever-trusting and happy-go-lucky duo of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito, the pranks are bound to generate an infectious quantity of laughter on the sets and among the audience.

Schwarzenegger revealed years later how, on the sets of Junior, DeVito had taken the liberty to stuff marijuana in a cigar and offer it to The Terminator actor, knowing the latter’s love for “stogies”. When shooting commenced, he had completely forgotten his lines and “was stoned out of [his] mind.” Schwarzenegger did get back on DeVito with the same prank 30 years later but found out, “He has a nose for marijuana,” and wasn’t as easy a target as the True Lies actor had been back then.

Once, while speaking to the Gulf News reporter, Hadley Freeman in 2013, DeVito also recollects how he had attempted to convince Schwarzenegger out of politics because they had to film the sequel to Twins together. Freeman recalls, “DeVito had tried to talk Schwarzenegger out of running at all by pointing out that they would have to postpone making Twins 2: [DeVito] was like, ‘Governor of California, here,’ he hovers his left hand just above the floor. ‘Twins 2, here!’ And he raises his right-hand sky high.”

The iconic duo have still not gotten over the laughs and the pranks and recount the marijuana mishap incident fondly. While Schwarzenegger still hadn’t been able to sneak in his revenge on DeVito, the latter is just lucky they had been filming an Ivan Reiter film and not a James Cameron one. While Reiter took the prank in good stride and even joined in on the laughter, the latter apparently wouldn’t have let them off the hook that easily.
