Ryan Reynolds shared another one of his gratitude write-ups for Deadpool & Wolverine, and this time, he’s thanking all the artists who worked on the practical effects of the film. There’s no better way to acknowledge their work than to show one of their best works in the film—the Wade Wilson scar makeup. Fans who followed the BTS content of the film should know that the look was completely created using practical effects rather than CGI.
The efforts of the film to promote practical effects may be celebrated by Marvel fans. The studio has been criticized several times for employing unnecessary CGI in their films, from locations to digital touch-ups for actors. Reynolds even admitted that there was a temptation to use CGI but they refrained from it.
Ryan Reynolds Refused To Use CGI For Portraying One Feature Of His Deadpool Character
Ryan Reynolds took to his Instagram stories to share one of the “creepier” things that one would find in his makeup trailer during Deadpool & Wolverine. He shared an image of the Wade Wilson scar makeup, which was created fully using practical effects. Earlier, BTS photos of the film were shared online and fans saw the actor wearing this makeup (via PEOPLE).
The Green Lantern actor also addressed the temptation to create the face using CGI, but they instead chose to stick to practical makeup. He shared that crafting the practical FX was a highly specialized skill that CGI could never replicate. Reynolds shared that the design of the Wade Wilson look was an “enormous component” of the film’s storytelling.
Reynolds thanked everyone who worked behind bringing this prosthetic to the screen. Reynolds named the VFX makeup artist, Bill Corso, who designed the look back in 2015. Bill Corso shared some of the looks from the latest film on his Instagram page.
The Adam Project actor also gave a shout-out to the artists who worked on the film, Monica Huppert, Geoff Redknap, and Robb. Deadpool & Wolverine‘s reliance on healthy amounts of VFX and practical FX was seen throughout the film. Since it was not overused, some of the CGI scenes in the film actually felt pretty good after a long time in a Marvel film.
Ryan Reynolds’ Wade Wilson Look Was Not The Only Practical Thing In The Film
Interestingly, this was not the first time that Ryan Reynolds’ latest record-breaking film was talked about for its use of practical effects. While sharing the story of how he came up with the Fever Dream sequence in the film, Shawn Levy put out a BTS photo from the film that went viral (via Instagram). In the photo, Wolverine can be seen hanging on a large X during his crucifixion scene.
Fans appreciated the 55-year-old actor’s commitment and the film’s genuine effort to go for practical effects. In the photo, fans can also see the thousands of bloody skulls lying on the floor between Reynolds and Hugh Jackman. It must’ve taken a really long time for a team of artists to create such an elaborate sequence practically.
Deadpool & Wolverine is successfully playing in theaters.
