Director Alex Kurtzman Was Disappointed with The Mummy

In an episode of The Playlist podcast, The Mummy director Alex Kurtzman declared that the movie was the biggest failure of his life and continued to claim that this failure has taught him many things and even helped him to be a better director. With Tom Cruise leading The Mummy, Universal had formed plans to make the franchise one of the best by bringing in under the Dark Universe banner. But it wasn’t long before the movie totally flopped with critical negative reviews and mediocre box office collections which forced the higher-ups to scrap any plans for the future of the franchise.

“As brutal as it was, in many ways, and as many cooks in the kitchen as there were, I am very grateful for the opportunity to make those mistakes because it rebuilt me into a tougher person, and it also rebuilt me into a clearer filmmaker”

As all the plans for the franchise were turned to dust, all of them moved on, be it the actors, the crew, or the production team, and have taken it as a nudge, but Alex Kurtzman was deeply affected by the response the movie had when it was released. As it turns out he had many things to learn from this failure though he enjoyed directing it, as he claims he even had fun working alongside Tom Cruise. Now, we all know that Cruise is also a big-time producer and filmmaker, and Kurtzman claimed that as long as one knew their stuff, “He’s easy to work with”.
