Oscar nominee James Mangold gave the fan-favorite character, Wolverine, a closure in the 2017 film Logan. The movie became even more special for fans after its lead star Hugh Jackman announced that he would retire from playing the character after the 2017 film. While fans were taken aback by the news, they were satisfied with the way Logan gives closure to the beloved character. It was praised for almost everything from its story, performances, and representation, and is also considered one of the best superhero movies of all time.

However, fans were surprised after the Wolverine actor Hugh Jackman announced that he would be reprising his X-Men role in the Deadpool threequel alongside Ryan Reynolds. While fans have been thrilled with the news, the director of Logan doesn’t seem to feel the same way about it and has claimed that the studio would continue milking the character as long as they can.

James Mangold Believes the Studio Would Not Stop With Deadpool 3

Marvel fans started looking for the potential actor for the titular hero Wolverine, who would be as good as Hugh Jackman after he announced his retirement from playing the character. And they were surprised and excited at the same time when the X-Men star announced his comeback as Wolverine in Deadpool 3 alongside Ryan Reynolds.

While the actor and fans are happy about his comeback, James Mangold, the director of the 2017 film doesn’t seem to feel the same. “I can’t say that there’s a part of me that doesn’t wish that we’d let it be,” he said during his recent interview with Variety.

He further stated that there would always be another Wolverine. However, the director also believes that the studio would not be done with Jackman’s Wolverine in the Deadpool threequel. “As much liquid as they can squeeze out of that rag, they’re going to try to,” he shared.

While it has been claimed that Deadpool 3 would not meddle with the events of Logan, Mangold still doesn’t seem too pleased with the Prisoners actor reprising his role in the threequel. As of now, it is uncertain if the Wolverine actor will continue playing the character in the MCU or if the studio will cast another actor as the titular hero.

Will Hugh Jackman Continue Playing Wolverine in the MCU?

Hugh Jackman had his big break as Wolverine in the 2000 film X-Men. He continued playing the character for over a decade and a half and was last seen as Logan in the 2017 film. He is set to reprise his character seven years after the 2017 film Deadpool 3, and fans wish to see him playing the character in the future as well.

Although his MCU debut has been termed as reprising the character “one more time,” it is uncertain if the actor plans to stick to his commitment or continue playing the titular hero in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

It seems likely as the actor is considered perfectly fit to play the character for another ten years. However, it also seems unlikely, as Jeff Loveness has said that the arrival of X-Men in the MCU is “pretty far away.” Fans will have to wait and see what the studio and the actor have in mind regarding the beloved character.

Deadpool 3 is set to release on 3 May 2024.
