Hugh Laurie has seen it all. The British star might have never hoped of pursuing acting as a profession in the long run. But a freak injury (and a fortuitous turn of events) saw him foray into acting. And what a journey has it been for real.
The Stuart Little star has scaled the heights of the Industry , with his shows in particular marking the peak of his career. For him, it has all been about going from strength to strength ever since. Receiving his own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame was all but obvious. But even he couldn’t wrap his head around the same.
Hugh Laurie was not always looking to be an actor
Hugh Laurie was always hoping that he would go on to compete in the Olympics, following up in the footsteps of his father. But it was not supposed to be. As luck would have it, he would have to let go of his ambitions. He would have another road (not one that was really less traveled by). And that has made all the difference.
Having started his career after joining Cambridge Footlights, where he met Emma Thompson and Stephen Fry. Their increasing camaraderie would be invaluable in making the House MD star the bigshot that he has turned out to be. The opportunity to pick the brains of this iconic duo after all is not one that every budding star had.
Huge Laurie’s rise to fame
Hugh Laurie’s career would practically take off from that moment. Collaborating with Stephen Fry in P.G. Wodehouse’s adaptation of Jeeves and Wooster, and being part of Rowan Atkinson’s classic series, Blackadder, might probably be the highlight of his early career.
Yet, the real highlight of his career has to be House MD. Playing the role of Dr. Gregory House saw him garner the love of fans from around the world. Not to forget, the two Golden Globes and SAG Awards apart from six Emmy nominations. Hence, It was this show that made him acting royalty.
No wonder that he would eventually be given Hollywood’s (arguably) greatest honor – a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Hugh Laurie couldn’t wrap his head around receiving a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame
The year was 2016. The world had still not experienced a pandemic induced lockdown. And on a random October day, Hugh Laurie would formally become one of the many stars to receive his Hollywood Walk of Fame. But for Laurie, it was still an event that he couldn’t believe.
He said,
“There’s joy and then there’s a strong dose of imposter. As a child you looked at an adult generation of sure-footed confident people who told stories, or climbed mountains, or hit a cricket ball, and you looked at them as titanic figures. As you age you realize the time has come to become an adult — and that leads to strong feelings of Imposter Syndrome. Maybe James Stewart felt that. I doubt it, though.” (Variety)
He might be feeling like an Impostor. But we can all be assured that this is just him acting. No wonder only a star like him could do that.
