Assassin’s Creed Mirage is closing in on its launch on October 12, 2023. Assassin’s Creed is one of the most popular game franchises, with 12 main entries. It’s hard to keep track of the time when a game is taking place in a long-spanning franchise like Assassin’s Creed. With the upcoming release of Assassin’s Creed Mirage, let’s find out where it falls in the series timeline.
Ubisoft has released several books to clarify for gamers when the games are set and how they’re related to one another. The first AC game was released way back in 2007, and the last game in the franchise, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, came out three years ago. Assassin’s Creed Mirage is the first mainline entry that will link the “modern” games to the “classic” installments, especially taking it back to its roots, the first release in 2007.
Assassin’s Creed is set to get back into the spotlight with Mirage, and it becomes important to know where the game falls in the massive franchise’s timeline. This is especially important for new players who are looking to jump into the popular series and could feel overwhelmed.
Assassin’s Creed Mirage In The Franchise’s Timeline
The games in the franchise span over many years and have stories that go back to ancient Egypt. While previous games in the series go back in history, Assassin’s Creed Mirage marks an important point by not following that. Mirage takes place post-Assassin’s Creed Odyssey and Assassin’s Creed Origins titles. Although these games are connected to the earlier titles, they are seen as another era of the AC franchise.
This sounds easy to understand, but the protagonist in the upcoming Assassin’s Creed Mirage worsens the matter. Basim Ibn Ishaq has previously appeared in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, which launched three years ago. Basim played an important role in the game and was an ally of the main character in the game, Eivor and it was also revealed that he is the reincarnation of Loki.
Basim was then trapped in an Isu computer system and was later freed in 2020. Next, Basim re-joined the Assassins in modern-day, and then used the Animus to finish Eivor’s journey with them. Assassin’s Creed Mirage will also connect to Origins, as Basim is trying to track down the Hidden Ones before they become the Assassins.
Therefore, the question arises: is Assassin’s Creed Mirage a sequel or prequel? The answer is that it is both. Valhalla is set right after or during the events of Mirage and Assassin’s Creed Mirage is followed by the original Assassin’s Creed, which is set around 300 years after the Viking invasion. This technically makes Mirage one of the first installments in the franchise’s timeline.
Assassin’s Creed Mirage in the Real-World Timeline
In Assassin’s Creed Mirage, Basim Ibn Ishaq embarks on an adventure set in Baghdad in 861, which is considered one of the most prosperous times of the popular city of Iraq. The city of Baghdad has four districts in Mirage, called Round City, Karkh, Abassiyah, and Harbiyah. The developers have also confirmed that players will visit the fortress headquarters of the Hidden Ones, Alamut.

However, it is not known how Mirage will set up Animus and Abstergo in the game. It is also confirmed that “Animus Glitches” will make a comeback in the game, which is one of the oldest tropes in the franchise, established in 2007. It is not yet certain if the addition of Animus Glitches hints at the presence of Animus in the game.
Mirage will be told from the perspective of a young Basim who fights for the free will of the people and shows his rise from a street thief to a warrior and assassin. However, almost every game in the Assassin’s Creed franchise has seen the Animus, so it is hugely unlikely that it will be missing in Mirage. But there is so much more that Mirage will have for players. Assassin’s Creed Mirage will launch on October 12, 2023, for PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and last-gen consoles.
