Hajime Isayama’s beloved Attack on Titan manga has had notable crossovers with other works like Seven Deadly Sins and Boku No Dragons while little is remembered about Attack on Avengers. As you may’ve guessed, it was a crossover featuring Titans and characters from Marvel Comics. Not only were the Avengers present to save the day but also the whole Guardians of the Galaxy.

Attack on Avengers is an 8-page special that was published in the preview of Marvel’s Secret Wars edition during Free Comic Book Day 2015. However, the collaboration of Marvel and Kodansha based on a ‘What If’ scenario was first seen in Issue 790 of pop culture magazine Brutus, dated November 2014.

While Hajime Isayama wrote the story, the art was done by visual artist Gerardo Sandoval, who has worked on multiple Marvel projects including Wolverine, Death of the Venomverse, and Amazing SpiderMan.

Attack on Avengers: A surreal action story

A one-shot manga crossover, Attack on Avengers focuses little on story development and jumps headlong into action. On one side, reporter Trish Tibly informs the readers that Titans have started appearing at Central Park in Manhattan while the other features Iron Man zooming into action and asking S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Maria Hill about the creatures. Interestingly, it was the first time that Titans were revealed to be appearing from water.

Spider-Man, Hawkeye, Captain America, and Black Widow engage in combat with an Armored Titan. Spidey takes out two Titans by electrocuting them. Meanwhile, Hawkeye mentions their weak spot, their nape, and the Avengers get the upper hand against the monsters who ravage half the region. Attack on Avengers also features a Female Titan and a Colossal Titan, the latter prompting the Guardians of the Galaxy to enter the action, as it made its way to the Statue of Liberty.

Attack on Avengers ends with StarLord’s entry with Rocket Raccoon, Drax the Destroyer, adult Groot, and Gamora in the background. The Guardians take over for the Avengers as they catch a breather. There is no definite ending given the fact that the special was made for promotional purposes. Nonetheless, fans deserved to know whether Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy could save New York from the monstrous Titans.

‘Heroic music intensifies in the background’

Attack on Avengers was announced by former Marvel Senior Vice President of Creative and Creator Development, C.B. Cebulski via Twitter (now known as X) on November 3, 2014. The Brutus issue also included an interview with the V.P. titled “The Boom Has Landed in America. The Reason Is Because Americans Are Becoming Prisoners.”

In the discussion, Cebluski spoke about how American audiences must relate to the character of Eren Yeager and his friends and their fight beyond the wall so as to stop ‘living within walled confines.’ The magazine also featured an interview with Hajime Isayama in which he revealed more about his ‘ugly’ art style and doodling.

Another interesting fact about Attack on Avengers is that when the Guardians of the Galaxy appear, the title of the song Hooked on a Feeling is seen scripted in the background. It is a reference to a song in the 2014 film Guardians of the Galaxy film directed by James Gunn.
