Like 2019 and 2023, which have been remarkable for moviegoers, 2025 is shaping out to be another sizeable year in terms of big releases, and things have just ameliorated with GTA 6. With Rockstar confirming the highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto 6 to hit shelves in 2025, this has sent fans into a frenzy, as they can’t wait to experience the next true-gen experience.
But things aren’t looking sour for movie fans either, as apart from GTA 6, which will make and break several records, several huge releases are planned to hit theatres in 2025.

2025 Is Setting Out to Be a Huge Year for Sequels and Reboots
While the SAG-AFRTA and WGA strikes halted Hollywood productions for over three months, James Cameron’s sequel to Avatar 2 has remained unaffected and will hit theatres on 19 December. 2025 is also setting out to be a return-to-form year for DC, which the studio desperately needs as all of their releases this year up to this point have bombed at the box office.
But with The Batman Part II scheduled for a release on October 3 and Superman: Legacy, the first major DCU project, coming on 11 July, which will take the character back to his roots, things are looking quite bright for DC fans.
And with Fantastic Four scheduled for a release on 2 May, MCU fans will also have something to smile about. And by far the most enthralling of all is Shrek’s return to the big screen. While there hasn’t been any official confirmation, following Dream Works’ track record with the Shrek IP for the most part (Shrek 3 doesn’t exist), fans can expect some pure cinema on their part. But apart from GTA 6, gamers will also be able to witness a Live-action Minecraft movie, starring Aquaman Star Jason Momoa and GOT star Pedro Pascal, which further adds to the hype.
PC Players Might Not Jump Into the Fun Upon GTA 6’s Initial Release
Unfortunately, it appears PC players might not be able to jump onto the bandwagon in 2025, as Rockstar has only confirmed releases for Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5. And with no mention of a PC port, it seems GTA 6 is going to follow the norm of other releases from the studio, possibly coming to PC a year or two after its console release. But following the trailer that Rockstar has pumped out, it’s safe to say the wait will be worth it.
Although 2025 is setting out to be a huge year for movies, most of the big releases are either reboots of established IPs or sequels. This is a letdown compared to 2023, which has been a golden year for original releases, with some of the biggest hits of the year being Greta Gerwig’s Barbie and Nolan’s 3-hour-long period drama Oppenheimer.
