The upcoming Netflix live-action adaptation of Avatar The Last Airbender has officially wrapped up filming. This seems to bring a fresh take on the beloved children’s series that aired from 2005 until 2008. The animated series was created by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko.
Throughout the series, fans will meet several characters with distinct roles, and a few of them are mentors. Aang’s journey as an Avatar gave him the opportunity to learn from the best, and so he himself also became a teacher. Here are the best mentors from Avatar The Last Airbender:
Aang
After Aang has finally fulfilled his duties as an Avatar, he became the guiding light to Korra as she takes on her journey to become one. Aang made sure that she will take on her responsibilities diligently as Avatar Roku did to him.
When Korra experienced the lowest point in her life, Aang gave her a piece of inspiring advice: “When we hit our lowest point, we are opened to the greatest change.” As a mentor, Aang is always there to support her but still lets her enjoy freedom.
Toph Beifong
Toph is a powerful Earthbender, and one of the most important characters in Avatar The Last Airbender. In fact, she became a mentor to two Avatars, Aang and Korra. Toph is also significant in the victory against Ozai.
Like Aang, Toph also taught Korra to overcome her fears by metalbending the poison out of her body. Korra then regained her control of the Avatar state. This brought peace within the nations as well as the spirit world.
Monk Gyatso
He is an Airbender who originated from the Southern Air Temple. Monk Gyatso became not only a mentor but also a father to Aang. He is a master at controlling the element of air, and Aang usually calls him the greatest of all.
As a mentor, Monk Gyatso is kind, humble, and has a sense of humor. When he trained Aang, he was not very strict, and he allowed time for fun and rest. He taught him the importance of being at peace and kind to others. This greatly influenced Aang throughout his journey as the Avatar.
Iroh
Uncle Iroh, as he is popularly known, is one of the main characters in Avatar The Last Airbender. He is a Firebender, and uncle to Prince Zuko and Princess Azula. He traveled the world with his nephew, who was punished by exile, to find the Avatar.
Unlike Zuko, Iroh was kind and patient. He does not give up on Zuko despite the lad’s stubbornness, and he guides him like a father all throughout their adventure. Indeed, it was Uncle Iroh who brought changes in Zuko’s personality and choices.
Roku
Roku is known as one of the greatest mentors in the series. He is a Firebender who was a close friend of Aang’s former mentor, Monk Gyatso. He also helped guide Aang to the right path and has imparted many valuable lessons to him.
On one occasion, Roku saved Aang by placing his spirit in the Avatar’s body to escape danger. He is very committed to helping Aang fulfill his duty.
